WALLACE: Well he said that an unconditional withdrawal would be dangerous.
He said that on Sunday before Barack Obama departed for the war zone. I
believe probably hopeful that he would change his mind.
He came back. I think he fudged it a little bit, as he often does, but he
still came back committed to a 16-month timetable.
BARNICLE: But Admiral Mullen has also said the troops' strength is so
stretched so thin—something very similar to what Barack Obama has said…. I
don't understand how they're at odds.
WALLACE: Well, look. You know I always think there are discussions to be
had, but I think there is a black and white distinction between what John
McCain believes is the right way to end this war and victory, with a
conditions-based withdrawal, that's frankly where the Iraqis are too. I know
that got a little muddied.
And I think there is a yes or no answer to the question, 'Did the surge
work?' which I again—I didn't read everything this morning. He may have
wriggled around on that too, but I understand his answer on the surge to
have been, 'No way. Not a good idea,' and he still has about eight different
explanations for why we've been successful. Not all of them include the
surge.
