For the past decade I have been a Senior Fellow in Governance Studies at Brookings. During President Clinton’s first term, I served as Deputy Assistant for Domestic Policy. I am the only Democrat with a weekly column in the Wall Street Journal. And I am a strong supporter of Hillary Clinton’s quest for the Democratic presidential nomination, as I was in 2008. This brings me to the brief telephone call I would like to have with President Clinton. Five years ago, I helped start a new organization called No Labels, whose purpose is to restore bipartisan cooperation in Congress and throughout our country’s politics. Our premise is that in these polarized times, it will be difficult at best to make progress on our biggest problems without a measure of cooperation across party lines. We have catalyzed the creation of a bipartisan “Problem Solvers” caucus in the House, which now numbers 75 members, equally divided between Democrats and Republicans. We have unveiled what we call the National Strategic Agenda, based on goals for the country that enjoy strong majority support among Democrats, Republicans, and Independents. Next spring we will release at least 50 proposals to promote those goals, all of which will be broadly supported across lines of partisanship and ideology. We are also running a campaign without a candidate in New Hampshire, with a substantial paid staff bolstered by dozens of young volunteers. On October 12, we will host a Problem Solvers convention that will bring together the largest group of uncommitted voters who have not declared a party preference in the history of the New Hampshire primary. As you know, these voters can participate in either the Democratic or Republican primary, and in the past their choices has often proved decisive—especially when both parties have competitive primary contests.
