We are in the process of investigating Jeffrey Epstein, the billionaire who previously was granted a non-prosecution
agreement following an investigation based in Florida, for conduct committed in New York—specifically, paying dozens of
minor girls to engage in sex acts with him at his Manhattan mansion. The investigation is still very much covert and
confidential, but we've quietly been in touch with victims in New York and Florida and we expect to charge the case in the
next week or so.
One extremely important element of the case will be making sure we comply with our victims' rights obligations,
especially because in the initial Florida investigation the U.S. Attorney's Office violated those rights (as was recently found
by a federal court in Florida). So we wanted to coordinate with you on the best way to provide information for victims to
contact us. I think sometimes in a case like this we would have the victims call the FBI, but because of the extreme
sensitivity about the prior U.S. Attorney's Office failing to meet the requirements, we may want to direct victims to
contact us.
It may be that we get very few calls, or we may get a ton—it will be a high-profile prosecution and it's been widely
reported that he had dozens or hundreds of victims. Would there be a good time sometime in the next couple days to
meet and talk about what you think would be most effective and most efficient in terms of making sure we have our
bases covered? Some combination of the case team (me, M, and I are available anytime that's convenient
for you, and we can also send any additional info that would be helpful.
Thanks very much as always,
Assistant U.S. Attorney
