Scott Brown (R-Mass.) to support the legislation. Americans United for Change targets only the Massachusetts Republican in its newest spot, tilted "Promise." In it, the progressive-leaning organization uses snippets spliced from Brown's victory speech to argue that he would be abandoning early promises of independence from party and lobbyists by voting against the legislation. [cid:[email protected]]<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtZhvrsBXec> The ad is a reflection of how new math dominates the United States Senate. With Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) unable to turn to a united Democratic caucus for the 60 votes needed to break a filibuster, his attention as well as that of issue-advocacy organizations now ventures to the small group of Republican senators who are sometimes willing to buck their party's leaders. Brown told the Huffington Post on Friday that he was still<http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/02/18/scott-brown-not-yet-rulin_n_467666.html> "analyzing" the jobs bill, implying that he remains open to supporting it. But with Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) unable to attend a vote this week due to his recuperation from stomach cancer, Reid will need a second Republican in addition to Brown. In the end, it may be too big a hill to climb, though GOP leader Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) refused to indicate how Republicans would vote on the legislation. "We need to have amendments and vote on it," he said. An official at Americans United for Change tells the Huffington Post that the ad purchase is "five figures" and will air on cable, "mostly focused on Boston." The Senate votes today on whether to proceed with Reid's bill, which includes tax breaks for companies that hire unemployed workers and for small businesses that purchase new equipment. It also would renew the Highway Trust Fund and help state and local governments finance large infrastructure projects. Democrats have 59 votes in the Senate, and one Democrat, Sen. Snowe has been holding out for extended tax breaks on loans and a plan to give stimulus funds to small businesses, Politico reports<http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0210/33256.html>, while Collins as of Friday wanted a handful of more tax provisions, such as an extended tax credit allowing companies to write off some research and development costs. "Tell him: Keep your promise to stand with us and create jobs for Massachusett," says the ad, which is airing in a "five-figure" Boston cable buy, the group says. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) on Monday, seeking to pressure him into supporting a jobs bill before the Senate. Americans United for Change released a television ad in the Boston area this morning featuring clips of Brown stressing his independence, saying that the newly-sworn-in senator should keep that promise by independence by voting for the $15 billion jobs bill facing a procedural vote today. The ad follows a formula that many groups may pursue against Brown over the next two years, until he has to seek reelection in 2012. Having scored an unlikely Republican victory in heavily-Democratic Massachusetts, Brown is seen as a possible supporter of some Democratic priorities as a way to burnish his centrist credentials. "Today, Sen. Brown will have his chance to cast an important vote on legislation that would put Americans back to work," said Americans United for Change acting executive director Tom McMahon. "Will Sen. Brown buck his GOP leaders that have been huddling with lobbyists to block the bill or will he show his independence and vote to put the people of Massachusetts back to work?" Scott Brown (R-Mass.) to back the Democrats' jobs bill and follow through on his campaign pledge to work across the aisle. The 30-second spot<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtZhvrsBXec>, with grainy footage from Brown's election night victory speech, will run Monday and Tuesday on cable news in Boston. Americans United for Change, a liberal coalition, announced Monday morning that they've made a five-figure buy, meaning that they'll spend at least $10,000. "Today, Sen. Brown will have his chance to cast an important vote on legislation that would put Americans back to work," said Tom McMahon, the acting executive director of the group, in a statement. "Will Sen. Brown buck his GOP leaders that have been huddling with lobbyists to block the bill or will he show his independence and vote to put the people of Massachusetts back to work?" Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) needs at least two Republicans to pass a critical procedural vote Monday night. He's spent the last week trying to win Brown's vote for his $15 billion jobs package, saying Friday that there's a greater than 50-50 chance Brown will back cloture. Brown's office said that the senator, who hasn't been in office a month and still doesn't have a web site, would study the bill over the weekend. [cid:[email protected]] http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/dc/2010/02/brown-faces-a-schumer-jobs-tes.html Brown Faces a Schumer Jobs Test ><http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/dc/2010/02/brown-faces-a-schumer-jobs-tes.html> By Michael McAuliff Massachusetts' newly elected GOP Sen. Scott Brown faces an early and interesting test on bipartisanship today, courtesy of Chuck Schumer and Harry Reid. That would be the first test vote on a jobs bill that Reid dramatically scaled down just before the break, leaving little but Schumer's measure for a Social Security tax holiday for employers. A tax cut for job-creators? Sounds tailor-made for a brand new moderate senator, but the GOP is peeved that Reid excised its cherished $30 billion in tax-break extenders after Republican leaders refused to commit to backing the bill. So now, GOP senators have to decide if they want to punish Reid, or back a Schumer bill that you can bet employers will like - and that will make a very easy ad against Republicans who oppose it. In fact, Democrats are already set to strike preemptively at Brown, reminding people with a spot in the Bay State that the one-time Cosmo boy promised to put people and jobs over politics. "I will work in the Senate with Democrats and Republicans.... The independent voice of Massachusetts has spoken," Brown says in a clip in the spot from Americans United for Change that should go up this morning. It ends: "Call Senator Brown. Tell him: Keep your promise to stand with us and create jobs for Massachusetts." Email her at [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> Facing a highly partisan vote on a Washington D.C. jobs bill today, a group that works closely with D.C. Dems and the Obama administration has cranked up the pressure on U.S. Sen. Scott Brown. Americans United for Change unleashed a five-figure ad buy in the Boston area this morning that focuses on Brown's promise of independence. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtZhvrsBXec The ad, called "Promise" comes as Brown has remained tight-lipped about how he will vote, and so has Senate Minority leader Mitch McCallum. The vote is scheduled for today. "When Scott Brown was elected, he promised the people of Massachusetts there would be no more closed-door meetings or back room deals. Does that standard still apply now that he's in the Senate?" said AUFC acting director, Tom McMahon, in a statement that reflects how different the post-Brown Washington landscape has become. "Today, Sen. Brown will have his chance to cast an important vote on legislation that would put Americans back to work. We know that the Republican leadership will do everything in its power to kill this bill and has been strategizing with lobbyists behind closed doors to make this happen. Will Sen. Brown buck his GOP leaders that have been huddling with lobbyists to block the bill or will he show his independence and vote to put the people of Massachusetts back to work?" ________________________________________ Jeremy J.
