*Main Topics: *energy, drilling, fully-inflated tires*
Summary:* GOA shows the Iraqi government could have $79M budget surplus at
year's end. Federal officials set to reveal possible motive behind the 2001
anthrax attacks. President Bush expresses hope N Korea will be off the axis
of evil soon. Senate Democrats refuse to enter summer recess in order to
prevent appointments without their approval while House Republicans refuse
to leave because of a drilling bill they'd like to pass. An NRA spy
allegedly infiltrated two anti-violence groups. Maryland officials found a
Camp David map at the home of a teenager held on firearm charges. MSNBC
plays a significant amount of Olympic games. Late in the morning, reports
came out that a jury of military officials reached a guilty verdict on the
trial of Osama Bin Laden's driver.
Paris Hilton's response to John McCain's 'Celeb' ad continues to
grab airtime this morning. Energy is once again the central issue in
campaign coverage with a strong emphasis on offshore drilling. Speculation
over vice presidential picks is a recurrent subject of stories and panels.
Highlights:
1. Energy
a. MSNBC: Crist talks about the tone and energy platform of McCain's
campaign
b. FNC: Crist debates Bayh
c. CNN: Jeanne Moos: McCain does agree with Obama that tire inflation is
a good thing
Highlights No YouTube:
1) MSNBC – JOE SCARBOROUGH: 'John McCain had a great story until George
[W] Bush became president.'
2) WTTE- FOX-OH: Summary of responses from candidates to Paris Hilton ad
followed by, 'Tomorrow McCain will be in Wilmington, OH, tackling DHL's plan
to use UPS for air cargo shipping. If that company were to leave, it would
cost Ohio 10,000 jobs.'
3) WJBK-FOX-MI: '[…] republican presidential hopeful, John McCain is
coming back to Michigan. John McCain is expected to return to the state in
less than a week from today for high-priced fundraisers in Birmingham. He
was here yesterday for a visit to the Fermi nuclear plant. He called for the
construction of 45 new nuclear plants by 2030. He's a supporter of offshore
drilling.'

Highlight #1
*Crist Talks about the Tone and Energy Platform of McCain's Campaign *(MSNBC
08/06/08 7:08am)
JOE SCARBOROUGH: […] You supported [sic] a candidate that went from being
concerned about protecting the environment to running around motorcycle
events shouting, 'Drill, drill, drill.'
MIKA BRZEZINSKI: It's kind of a change.
SCARBOROUGH: It's kind of a change and we're a little confused. Explain.
BRZEZINSKI: It's a shift.
CHARLIE CRIST: Well, the facts have changed. The reality is Senator McCain
has been somebody concerned about the environment for a long time. First guy
who really talked to me about climate change.
He is a great leader on these issues. He also understands the importance of
how this issue, the rising price oil is affecting the American family and
certainly families here, in Florida, too, Joe. When it gets to about $4 a
gallon it's a crisis and it's a problem and it's rippling through our entire
economy.
So Senator McCain took a leadership position, said we should stop having the
moratorium at the federal level and let states decide individually. I know
that Senator Bayh is with us this morning. Good morning to you, sir. As a
former governor—
EVAN BAYH: Good morning, Charlie.
CRIST: I think he ms he would appreciate—it's good to be with you—probably
would appreciate the fact that, you know, state's ought to have that
independent right. The tenth amendment gives states those kind of rights. I
think Senator McCain is right on this again….
[…]
*SCARBOROUGH: Charlie Crist, let's talk about the tone of the campaign over
the past week. Even John McCain's 96-year-old mother is critical of these
ads that have been put out showing Paris Hilton and Britney Spears next to
Barack Obama. She says it's silly.* Don't you agree?
CRIST: Well, you know, what's wrong with a little humor. I think it's
important we not get so intense in this political environment that we lose
sight of a little of humor injected into a campaign. You talked about it
earlier on the show today, this is an expensive business, unfortunately.
It takes an awful lot of money to get a message out. Look at the brilliance
of what the McCain campaign can has been able to achieve. They make a
commercial for about $10 and get millions of dollars of exposure.
SCARBOROUGH: Why do they show images of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton? Why
is that juxtaposed next to Barack Obama?
CRIST: I think the point they are trying to make is Senator Obama is a very
charismatic figure. He's a guy that is a celebrity, a true American
celebrity and they are comparing him with other celebrities evidently and
making that point, but the question is, is he ready to lead? Does he have
the judgment? Does he have the experience to really lead our country?
SCARBOROUGH: All right, but Britney Spears didn't go to Harvard. Britney
Spears wasn't a community organizer. Britney Spears isn't a United States
Senator. That's a false analogy, isn't it?
CRIST: I don't know if it's a false analogy. I think they are both
celebrities. I think that's the only point they are trying to make. I don't
think they are trying to match up their resumes together. They are trying to
show these people are famous, well-known, are they ready to lead? That's the
real question in the presidential campaign.
*Governor Crist and Senator Bayh Debate their Candidates Energy Policies on
Fox and Friends* (FNC 08/06/08 07:18am)
[…]
GRETCHEN CARLSON: Governor Charlie Crist, you would know something about the
energy policy. You are one of the states where this is incredibly important,
Florida. You obviously support John McCain's stance on this.
CHARLIE CRIST: Senator John McCain, once again, is leading on this issue.
It's very important I think to understand that you do need a comprehensive
approach. Senator McCain certainly understands that. He talks about the
possibility of offshore oil drilling to increase our domestic production of
oil so we are not so dependent on foreign oil. When you realize that about
500 to $700 billion a year are being sent to the middle east in order for us
to have oil for our vehicles here in America, something has to be done to
offset that. Senator McCain understands that, as well as conservation.
Using nuclear power. He went to a nuclear plant yesterday in Michigan to
make that point.
[…]
CLAYTON MORRIS: Let's go back to Florida and talk more about Florida on this
energy issue. *Isn't it really an infrastructure issue? […] Offshore
drilling there is little infrastructure to get the oil from the water back
to the main land. Now that's unlike what's up there in Anwar where you have
the pipelines already in there. Isn't it disingenuous so say there can be
quick turn around with offshore drilling?*
CRIST: *Well not from what I hear from people in the industry. What they
tell me is they can, instead of in 10 years period of time, within about a
year and a half. Remember there is an awful lot of pipelines already hooked
up off of Louisiana and Texas. Some of those are not that far from the
Florida coast.* It's important for me to emphasize this, too. We've talked
about it in terms of allowing it but only if it's far enough, safe enough,
and clean enough. We have an important tourist industry here in the sunshine
state. We want to increase our domestic oil production to help our country,
obviously. But we want to do it in way that is smart. And that's what
Senator McCain believes in doing. Doing it in a way that is consistent with
protecting our environment, protecting our beaches in Florida. It's a
beautiful place to come visit. We want to make sure that while were doing
that though we do conserve, that we look to solar, wind, nuclear, tide
energy. All these things is what we have to do. It has to be all hands on
deck with this issue. A crisis, issue number one to voters of my state. When
gas hits $4 a gallon it's a crisis point. It affects the price of tourism
and food and I have been touring small businesses across the state and it's
having an impact.
[…]
BRIAN KILMEADE […] Senator Bayh, *will you have a hard time supporting
Barack Obama because you've worked so well with John McCain and you
supported Senator Hillary Clinton?*
EVAN BAYH: No, not at all. Look, I respect John McCain. *He is a good man.
But he is badly mistaken in embracing many of the Bush policies,
particularly the economic policies. And I think John was just wrong when he
said the last eight years have been pretty good for us economically and that
things are going pretty well today economically*. We need a change in
Washington, a fundamental change. And I think Barack Obama is best
positioned to provide that change.
*Jeanne Moos Examines McCain's Tire Gauge Stunt *(CNN 08/06/08 06:51am)
ROBERTS: Well when it comes to solving Americas energy problems, John McCain
seems to think Barack Obama is full of hot air.
CHETRY: […] The McCain campaign has a brand new weapon to drive the point
home.
JEANNE MOOS: Could this be the hiss of the air going out of a political
stunt? The tire pressure gauge has become the political prop of the week,
as the McCain campaign tries to use it to deflate Senator Obama.
MCCAIN: He suggested that we put air in our tires to save on gas. We're not
going to achieve energy independence by inflating our tires. The only thing
I've heard him say is that we should inflate our tires.
MOOS: This is what Senator Obama did say as he ticked off things individuals
could do to save energy.
OBAMA: Making sure your tires are inflated.
MOOS: Those seven words became what the McCain campaign dubbed, Obama's
Energy Plan. Emblazoned on tire pressure gauges they handed out on the
press plane. The McCain folks even handed out tire gauges to people lining
up for an Obama rally. They're being sold on eBay for 10 bucks. And over
and over, Senator McCain used tire inflation to tread on Obama.
MCCAIN: Do you think that's enough to break our dependence on Middle Eastern
oil? My opponent doesn't want to drill, he doesn't want nuclear power, he
wants you to inflate your tires.
MOOS: Tire pressure, tire pressure! All this talk about tire pressure is
raising my blood pressure. There's something wrong with my blood pressure.
Hoo Hiss is what columnist Joe Klein is saying.
JOE KLIEN: *I think the McCain campaign has some weird idea that you can win
a presidential election through mockery.*
MOOS: But the Automobile Association of America isn't mocking tire
inflation, on a vehicle like this just one tire:
So you're about 4lbs under inflated.
MOOS: Can result in this:
AAA EXPERT: So you're losing about 8% of your fuel economy.
MOOS: After several days of Republican spin on the tire issue Obama got
tired of it.
BARACK OBAMA: They're going around, they're sending like little tire gauges,
making fun of this idea as if this is Barack Obama's energy policy.
MOOS: His actual energy plan fills page after page on his website.
OBAMA: It's like these guys take pride in being ignorant. *They think it's
funny that they are making fun of something that's actually true. *
MOOS: But watch your back, tire gauges can be hazardous. This guy used one
to create a pipe to smoke ghanga. And our AAA expert found out it's not
just the gauge that's feeling the pressure. [Expert hit in head with camera]
CHETRY: By the way the McCain campaign emailed us with a reminder that *John
McCain did say that he does agree we should keep our tires inflated to the
optimum level.* He just doesn't think that it's enough to break our
dependence on foreign oil. And as we said there are a bunch of these
websites like politifect, who say that if your talking plausibility, *there
is a chance perhaps that if we all were running on optimum tire pressure we
could save as much as we could possible get from offshore drilling. *
