All along the east coast lives have been disrupted, people have lost their homes, their cars, their livelihood. I just got off the phone with the 5'th family in the last 48 hours who was seriously affected by Hurricane Sandy. When I say serious, I mean people who have lost their homes, cars, clothing and possessions. That's besides the tens of people we are in touch with who are affected by not having power. We bought some people yesterday (who couldn't get out of the house) food etc. Many part time employees haven't worked this whole week and lost out on covering some of their basic expenses. As I am stunned by the events this week and the marvel at the ravages the storm has caused. Things that I have seen with my own eyes, I think what else we can do. I wish to be able to give these families enough money to restore their life. These are Aleph families. People who have a family member who is incarcerated and things are not easy in the first place. People who Aleph knows personally and are in touch with all the time. As Jews we carry a responsibility to stand in the breach and help those in need in this crucial time. We are aware that many people are looking to help. We have access to help. The Aleph Institute is helping those families who we know that are in need throughout the storm-affected areas and the amount of help each one could use, is EFTA00641770  very hard to achieve. I just want to reiterate that this fundraiser is specifically for the 30-40 families that Aleph has heard from who need help. As well as the people we have yet to have contact with who can use our help. These are Aleph families and our focus is on them. All monies raised will be handed for different bills and needs of theirs. The more we get, the more effective we can be. Some families can use thousands and thousands of dollars for BASIC relief. There are other organizations who are targeting a much wider range of people affected by the storm.
