When Kevin Durant, one of basketball's most celebrated players, left Oklahoma City
to play for the Golden State Warriors, one of the N.B.A.'s most dominant teams, fans
were dying to know how Russell Westbrook would fair as the Thunder's sole
remaining star. "It seemed less like a question of sports than a Zen koan: What is the
sound of one hand clapping?" Sam Anderson writes in this week's cover story. "If
anyone could answer that, could explore its full range of sonic possibilities, it was
Russell Westbrook."
Elsewhere in the magazine, Saul Elbein follows the fight over the Dakota Access
Pipeline, in which Native American activists, building on the efforts of a group of
teenagers, achieved a galvanizing environmental victory — one since cast into doubt
by executive orders signed by President Donald Trump. Brook Larmer writes about
Chinese students in U.S. high schools, and Beverly Gage considers the "resistance"
that stands against Trump and the challenge of figuring out what it will stand for.
