I am known for sending around photos essays from my trips, like these http://nathanmyhrvold.com/index.php/travel, and
writing enormous cookbooks, like these http://modernistcuisine.com/.
But today I am sending around a far more serious topic. Like most people, 9/11got me thinking about terrorism and its
impact on a free society. The thinking got me writing, and that turned into a big memo. I kept revising it sporadically
over the next few years. A couple times I got interested in publishing it, but by then it was too long for most magazines or
journals. David Kris, former assistant attorney general, and Ben Wittes of the Brookings Institution convinced me that I
ought to share it more widely, so Ben has published it on his blog, and I will probably also turn it into a short ebook.
The PDF is enclosed.
Here is his into to the essay http://www.lawfareblog.com/2013/07/nathan-myhrvold-on-strategic-terrorism-a-call-to-
action-lawfare-research-paper-series/
It's a pretty depressing topic — how technology advances fundamentally favor terrorists. But life isn't all about 2438 page
cookbooks....
I won't say that I hope you enjoy it — that would be a bit much to ask — but if you are interested in the topic, I hope that
this will be thought provoking.
