That's odd, because he voted for the President's energy bill and I voted against it. I voted against it because it had 2.8 billion dollars in corporate welfare to oil companies that are already making record profits. Senator Obama voted for that bill and its big oil giveaways. *I know he hasn't been in the Senate that long, but even in the real world voting for something means you support it, and voting against something means you oppose it. * Just like on the energy bill, I have argued for reform and change in Washington for years, and it hasn't always made me friends with the politicians and pundits. But I don't answer to them; I answer to you. You will always know exactly where I stand and you will always know, no matter what, I will always do what I believe is right for our country. For his part, Senator Obama is an impressive orator. I applaud his talent and success. All Americans should be proud of his accomplishment. … But Washington is full of talented talkers. And unfortunately, on issues big and small, what Senator Obama says and what he does are often two different things. Senator Obama says he's going to change Washington. But his plan to raise your taxes and spend more of your money is not my idea of a solution to what troubles Washington. In fact, it sounds a lot like the problem. In the few years he's been in the Senate, he has requested nearly a billion dollars in pork barrel spending. That's a million dollars for every day he's been in office. We need to end this out of control spending in Washington, and when I am president it will stop. Senator Obama says he will only raise taxes on the rich. But in the Senate, he voted for tax hikes that would have impacted those making just *$42,000 *per year. He has proposed tax increases on income taxes, capital gains taxes, dividend taxes, Social Security taxes – pretty much anything that you can tax, he wants to tax more. We have the second highest business tax rate in the world, and Barack Obama thinks the way to keep jobs here at home is to make it higher. Raising taxes in a bad economy is about the worst thing you could do because it will kill even more jobs and send more jobs overseas. What we need are policies that create jobs. What we need today is an Economic Surge to keep jobs here at home and create new ones. We need to reduce the tax burden on businesses that choose to make their home in the U.S. We need to open new markets to U.S. products. We need to reduce the cost of healthcare. And we need to end the out of control spending in Washington that is putting our debt on the backs of our children. Senator Obama says he wants energy independence, but he is opposed to new drilling at home; he is opposed to nuclear power. He has said the high cost of gasoline doesn't bother him; only that it rose too quickly. He actually thinks that raising taxes on oil is going to bring down the price at the pump. * He is claiming that putting air in your tires is the equivalent of new offshore drilling… That's not an energy plan; that's a public service announcement. * We all agree we need to aggressively develop advanced alternative energies like wind, solar, tidal and biofuels. But we also need to develop more existing energies like safe nuclear power and clean coal. And we need to stop sending $700 billion a year to countries that don't like us very much, start drilling for more oil at home, and bring down the cost of gasoline that is killing our economy. If we are going to finally solve this problem, we need an "all of the above" approach. On Iraq, Barack Obama says he wants peace, but even today he opposes the surge strategy that succeeded in Iraq and will succeed in Afghanistan. His policy of unconditional withdrawal – regardless of the facts on the ground – could result in renewed violence and a third Iraq war. I am going to end this war, but when I bring our troops home, they will come home with victory, leaving Iraq secured as a democratic ally in the Arab heartland. *Behind all the words, Senator Obama's agenda can be summarized as this: Government is too big, and he wants to grow it. Taxes are too high, and he wants to raise them. Congress spends too much, and he proposes more. We need more energy, and he's against producing it. What will you do to expedite him getting help? - JM: I don't have stats to back this up but this part of USA has probably supplied more people to help fight than any other part b/c this is the Heartland. We can't let another Walter Reed happen. - We have an increase in PTSD - we know that, this is a terribly tough war. Adn we have the ability to treat more ppl in the field than before. We have to focus our military medical care and our V.A. care to "those unique aspects of veterans care". For routine needs, you should have a plastic card and get care at doctor of your choice. * * - I was the individual in Portsmouth that handed you a coin and I wanted to tell you that we--every vet in every city--we're all behind you. We need a person like you to run it. * * - 8Q) What are you going to do to stop ppl from losing good-paying jobs, esp ppl who work in auto plants? - JM: I went to MI and said the old auto jobs aren't coming back - the new auto jobs are coming back. The Volt, hybrids, flex fuels. I will give Americans tax credit for buying these. I just went to CA and met w/ ppl who'd built electronic car - but it was $100K. The next time it'll be $60k. Remember how big cell phones were when they first came out? Adn now they're practically giving them away. Some straight talk - Detroit's in trouble. But there's the Volt and there's what Chrysler and Ford are trying to do. And I'll do what I can to help them. * * - 9Q) A lot of politicians w/ a lot of supposed solutions. But they've failed to tell us HOW we're going to do it, esp Obama. What will your Admin specifically do in order to utilize these new tactics? - JM: Only 1 way, and that's the American people. Demand. We sit down GOP and Dem and force them to give us an energy policy that works. And we have to have a Cong that will allow a vote, and stay in town, stay at your desk. Adn I'll give them the credit. And it's got to be all of the above - it can just be one energy option. And we voted for an energy bill that frankly was a disgraceful failure. I voted against the energy bill, b/c it was the wrong thing to do for the American ppl, it was the right thing for special interests. There's only 1 way we've ever overcome things in USA and that's reaching across the aisle. And I can't promise you overnight success - it took 30 years to get here. * * - 10Q) Are you for a 3rd layer of fences (re: immigration)? - JM: I'm for fences: physical, virtual. In populated areas, you need real fences. In rural areas, you can use vehicle barriers etc. I don't think it's as effective to build a wall all the way across. In less populated areas, I think we have to use high-technology more. * * - 11Q) [little girl] Can I get a picture of you smiling? - JM: thank you [awkward] Now can I ask you to introduce this group of beautiful young people? - A: Lima cheerleaders. * * - 12Q) How do we get the liberal press to decide to listen to us? - JM: It is what it is. I'm confident we can do enough communication with the American ppl that we can directly communicate with them and they with me. * * - [woman says she's on McCain's Small Business Committee, thanks mccain for being great for small businesses] * * - 13Q) How many jobs do you think offshore drilling will create and how good for the economy will it be? - JM: I want to repeat,when you increase supply, the price goes down. And I don't know much about speculation, but one of the major reasons the price has gone up so much is that India and China's demands have gone off. So there's no doubt that when we drill off our shores, the price will go down. So jobs will be created and be good for our economy - especially since they're high-paying jobs [hard to hear]. And taxes will go down, which will also help. * * - 14Q) When are you going to announce your VP? - JM: VP is very very important. At the beginning VP has 2 duties: tiebreaking vote in Senate and to inquire daily as to the health of the Pres, and that'll probably be an important possiblity. - 15Q) I am a single-issue voter: pro-life. So you have my vote. But I have a lot of friends who are concerned about your stance on stem-cell research, destructive embryonic research, - JM: Stem-cell research is an agonizing issue b/c cures for diseases are possible. I'm confident that skin-cell research is reaching a point that will make stem-cell research academic. I believe the noblest words ever written are 'all men are created equal... pursuit of happiness' and I believe that applies to the unborn and to all unborn children acorss the world. I know what it's right to be deprived of some of your rights, and I'm proud of joining ppl like DeWine and Jim Jordan to change the debate so we are protecting more of the rights of the unborn. And i will not change my views, and my record is very clear on advocacy of rights of the unborn. And I say that with all due respect to ppl who hold opposing views on the matter. - JM: And that brings me to judges: 2-3 SCOTUS nominations will likely come up. Alito and Roberts are 2 of the finest - I voted for them, not b/c I agreed w/ their ideology but b/c they were qualified. Obama opposed them on ideological grounds. If we voted based on ideological grounds, we'd never get anyone passed. I will make sure they're strict-constructionists. - JM: I'm asking for your vote and active participation. We will disagree from time to time on specific issues adn that's healthy and good. But I will always always always put my country first.
