Fireworks over the East River in New York, as seen from a rooftop in Astoria. Stephen Hiliner/The New
York Times
Hello Insiders,
Is it just me or does July 4th seem an eternity ago? Thanks to those of you who
wrote in to share your Independence Day plans. You spent the day doing all sorts
of things: helping at a pancake breakfast, biking, watching the movie "1776,"
listening to baseball on the radio, running a half marathon, watching a parade.
What a day!
Here at The Times, at least one of us celebrated the run-up to July 4th with
Firework Oreos (yes, they exist!) at an Oreo tasting. Writes the Times food
columnist Tejal Rao:
I took a bite of one [(keg], typed up some initial thoughts and sipped room-
temperature seltzer before moving on to the nextflavor. After I had sampled all
of them, I went back andfinished each cookie, this time looking for more details
offlavor, texture and aroma. I used the remaining intact cookies to conduct an
informal dissection, pulling the biscuits apart and nibbling the components
individually, covering my keyboard in crumbs in the process. Keep reading.
I wonder how the Firework Oreo would have been received by Miss Juliet Corson,
overseer of The Times's food and household coverage in the 187os and i88os. She
was an advocate for French cooking (long before Julia Child) and had opinions on
matters of "cold mutton," home economy and the elimination of cockroaches.
Read on in David Dunlap's delightful column.
Until next week,
