In light of the current cold snap...
• 80% of the world's fresh water is locked up as ice or snow.
• Ten inches of fresh snow is approximately equal to a six-inch-layer of fiberglass insulation.
• The flu and colds are more common in the winter months because that is when the viruses spread across
the country. It has nothing to do with being outside in cold weather.
• The average thickness of the ice sheet that covers 98% of Antarctica is 2,200 meters (7,200 feet). This
amounts to 90% of the ice and 70% of all the fresh water in the world.
• The lowest temperature recorded in the world is minus 89.6°C (-128.6 °F) at the Vostok Scientific Station
in Antarctica on 21 July 1983, beating the station's former record of -88.3°C (-126.9°F) on 24 August
1960.
