The exemptions in Alaska and Minnesota are mostly to do with things like the length of the school day and how they hire their teachers. I haven't finished with them all yet, so I am hoping there will be some exceptions, but wanted to keep you in the loop. In Alaska and Minnesota charter schools are exempt from certain laws. I need to find out what these are to be 100% sure. I should have asked the common core standards question sooner - apologies. Alaska: • Standards as rigorous as and very similar to common core standards • graduation test in reading, writing and math • credits in each subject to graduate There is this charter school clause that I need to find out more about: charter schools are exempt from certain state laws and polides in order to allow innovation to take place; their charters must be approved by both local school boards and the State Board of Education & Early Development. Like Alaska, charter schools are exempt from some laws, so I need to look into this further. Nebraska: • Standards as rigorous as common core (and apparently based on common core) • achieve credits with time in seats • no charter school law. Texas: Urgh.
