KEY BLOCK----- *Main Topic: *Election Attention, McCain's Ads, Energy, Obama/Clinton Battling Again * * *Summary of Shift: *Attention on the election tonight focused on just that, attention, and how more of it seems to being paid to McCain. This is mostly thanks to his recent ads focusing on Obama's celebrity. These ads continue to be a leading topic of discussion, especially with new reports showing that McCain YouTube web page has beaten Obama's in number of hits for the past seven days in a row. There was some criticism related to this, however, with some pundits pointing out that all these ads coming out at once seem to point to a lack of direction in McCain's. New Clinton/Obama drama was the most talked about story this evening, overall. Much discussion was paid to whether the Clinton's really want Obama to win at the convention, what role Hillary will play at the convention, and whether Bill will be asked to speak. China, the Olympics, and Bush's visit there today was another major headline, especially focusing on China's human rights abuses and Bush's comments against those, followed by China's response telling Bush to mind his business. There's a new report claiming that Iraqi and U.S. officials are close to cementing a troop withdrawal timeline with troops gone by 2010. A man was arrested for threatening to assassinate Obama. Bin Laden's former driver, Hamdan was sentenced to 5.5 years in prison but was commuted for five of those as time served. And Detroit's mayor is in jail tonight for violating his parole. MSNBC – RACHEL MADDOW: "… The crack team at McCain HQ has made a lucrative offer to supporters. Cut and paste pro-McCain comments from the campaign website onto other websites as if they were your own, and you could earn points redeemable for an autographed McCain book or a good seat at a McCain event, or even a ride on McCain's bus. McCaniacs are invited to spread the word by quote, "Selecting from the numerous web, blog and news sites listed here, going there, and making your opinions supporting John McCain known. Once you've commented on a post, video or news story, report the details of your comment by clicking the button below. After your comments are verified, you will be awarded points through the McCain Online Action Center." Clips: Highlight #1 *Focus on McCain: Attention Switching from Obama to McCain *(MSNBC 08/07/08 6:15pm) RACHEL MADDOW: On today's show there is a two syllable word that you're hearing a lot more of than usual. It is a proper noun, rarely uttered in discussions of 2008 presidential politics, it's the word McCain. *For the first time the attention of the campaign is now turning away from Barack Obama and towards John McCain, after a series of four ads all on the subject of John McCain's so called, maverick status.* Is that a brand that is too tough for Obama to tarnish? […] […] MADDOW: What about this idea that the democrats are pushing now, that the John McCain of 2008 is not the same as Maverick John McCain. He's a new John McCain, a worst John McCain, and even if you liked the old guy, you shouldn't like John McCain in his current incarnation. What do you make of that argument? EUGENE ROBINSON: That seems to me to be a fairly promising argument, fairly easy for the democrats to make because you can just contrast the positions that the John McCain of old took and the positions of the John McCain of today takes. The one who just pledged fidelity to the White House in a way the old John McCain never would. So I think that's a fairly promising argument for the democrats, but I think you made the main point Rachel, which is they're talking about John McCain. It's not all about Barack Obama. […] It's a fundamental shift, I think, when people are asking those questions about John McCain and it takes some of the pressure off of Obama and puts some of the scrutiny on McCain. TONY BLANKLY: […] I have a different view on these ads. I think for people over 40 or 45 the McCain brand is so indelible as the gag fly, that whatever he or the democrats say won't make much difference. For people under 35 maybe some advertising, if the democrats want to spend millions of dollars, they might be able to move it a bit. But I think this is going to be more age specific because he has such a strong brand for people who remember him over the last 20 years. Highlight #2 *McCain's YouTube Hits Up Thanks to New Ads, But MoveOn.org Responds With Missing Votes Commercial of Their Own* (FNC 08/07/08 6:39pm) BRET BAIER: The ads Senator John McCain has released over the past few weeks appear to be working, at least on the internet. The Washington Times reports the ads focusing on the celebrity of democratic rival Barack Obama have pushed McCain's YouTube channel to the sixth most watched on the website this week. McCain's YouTube webpage has beaten Obama's for seven straight days, and eleven of the last fourteen. That is a huge turnaround. The tracking service, Tube Mogul says Obama had been quadrupling McCain's YouTube views, and had beaten him everyday since February. *Liberal activist group, MoveOn.org, has circulated an online video attacking Senator McCain. It shows McCain calling for Congress to come back to Washington and work on an energy bill, pointing out that McCain has missed more votes than any other senator this year*. To drive home that point, the video shows an arrow pointing to an empty seat. The problem, the seat highlighted in the video was in the House chamber. John McCain is a senator and therefore would sit in the Senate chamber. *While McCain has missed the most votes in the 110th Congress, Obama is the third biggest offender. […]* Highlight #3 *McCain Reusing Old Tactics As He Now Pushes Economic Surge* (CNN 08/07/08 4:17pm) WOLF BLITZER: Meanwhile, on the republican side, John McCain is using an interesting new way to try to describe how he hopes to fix the nation's economic problems. […] ED HENRY: […] *John McCain was already trying to get political credit for the surge working in Iraq, what's interesting now is he's taking the same approach to fixing the economy. Using the same language as the war debate, John McCain is now vowing to boost the economy with tax cuts. Just as vigourously as he worked to send more troops to Iraq last year.* MCCAIN: What we need is an economic strategy, an economic surge. A successful economic surge to keep jobs here at home and create new ones. HENRY: McCain also sharpened his attacks on Barack Obama, mocking his lack of experience. MCCAIN: All Americans should be proud of his accomplishments, but Washington is full of talented talkers. HENRY: In a new refrain he charged Obama's economic approach boils down to increasing taxes and government spending. […] McCain was particularly harsh on energy, yet again hammering the democrat for urging Americans to inflate their tires. […] Obama fired back that the tire guage incident shows McCain is more interested in scoring political points then solving the crisis. […] The campaign feels that they are scoring on energy. When McCain blasted Congress in a townhall meeting for going home, going on vacation before dealing with gas prices, there was a big, big standing ovation. A McCain operative turned to me and said, "We're kicking 'blank' on energy." Clearly, they think they've got Obama on the defensive on this issue. Highlight #4 *McCain's Voting Record on Energy Scrutinized, Shadiness Over Big Oil Subsidies Highlighted* (CNN 08/07/08 8:30pm) CAMPBELL BROWN: Barack Obama is trying hard to connect John McCain to President Bush's energy policies, but McCain says woah not so fast. [McCain's Town Hall in Lima, OH Shown] […] TOM FOREMAN: *For weeks Obama has been drawing these links between McCain's energy plan and the policies of President Bush, sticking with the theme that McCain will be just the McSame as Bush.* But McCain is now saying let's play that record. In 2005 when a big energy bill came up with potentially far reaching impacts on America's energy supply, President Bush supported the plan. Signed it into law three years ago this week, and 85 senators voted for it, including Barack Obama. Only twelve voted against it, and John McCain was one of them, saying it contained wasteful spending. The bill was sharply criticisized, even at the time for giving billions in subsidies to big oil. But Obama defends his vote, by pointing out that the measure also included funding for alternative and renewable fuels such as ethanol. He is after all a Senator from Illinois, a big corn state, and the nation's third largest ethanol producer. *And all of that said, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is now hitting McCain on a different vote, saying correctly that last year he could have helped repeal some of those tax breaks for big oil, but he was the only Senator to skip a critical vote on that measure, and big oil one the day.* Highlight #5 *Leaked McCain Campaign Memo Reveals Plan to Portray Obama as Job Killer *(MSNBC 08/07/08 6:33pm) RACHEL MADDOW: Next up, a leaked memo from the McCain campaign reveals a strategy to paint Obama as a job killing machine. It's according to a memo that was obtained by the Huffington Post. Quote, "The McCain campaign will paint Obama as being 'aligned with trial lawyers' and 'unions (card check, trade, education reform),' and push the frame that he 'raises taxes' and 'will kill jobs.'" *But that could be a tricky strategy for John McCain because his own advisor, former lobbyist Rick Davis, is loosely tied to a proposed closure of the DHL shipping site in Wilmington, OH that has made multiple appearances now on McCain's campaign trail. *As many as 8,000 jobs would be lost by this planned closure, McCain tried to persuade DHL fears in Wilmington, OH today by promising Congressional hearings and an investigation led by the justice department. But McCain did admit, quote "I can't assure you that the train wreck isn't going to happen but I will do everything in my power to see that we avert it." […] Highlight #6 *Pawlenty Defends McCain's Efforts To Distance Himself From Bush* (FNC 08/07/08 4:39pm) […] NEIL CAVUTO: Still, Governor, there are some conservatives in the party who were a little concerned when Senator McCain recently would not make an ironclad guarantee about sticking to tax cuts. And I'm paraphrasing here, but, that he laid open the possibility, in saying in so many words, that taxes could go up under certain circumstances. What about just the no tax pledge, sticking to it, pounding it repeating it. TIM PAWLENTY: In fairness to Senator McCain, he did come out shortly after those initial concerns and definitely clarify those statements, saying he was opposed to tax increases. So, over the years I think he's said in the context of a social security discussion, he would have a discussion, at least, about anything. But, as it relates to tax increases, he clarified his statement very promptly after that concern was raised to say he wasn't going to raise any taxes. […] CAVUTO: *Governor, Senator McCain has gone on record in saying via an ad that we are worse off than we were four years ago.* Some of course, in the Bush White House, interpreted as a slap on the President. Was it? PAWLENTY: Well, that can be objectively measured. I think Senator McCain and President Bush have had some tense relationships over the years on a variety of issues. But, if you look back at the key measurements of quality of life, or economic performance that's not a disputable matter, in the sense that you can go back and measure it. Whether it's fair or accurate is something that can be proven, not debated. CAVUTO: […] Would you as a friend, and advisor be telling Senator McCain get as far away from President Bush as you can? PAWLENTY: Well, Senator McCain has an established record and reputation for being a maverick, being an independent, and you look at all the times that he has taken on or been different than the President, including the surge, including torture, including nuclear proliferation issues, including spending, and energy issues as well, Senator McCain has already has a reputation being different then, or separated from President Bush. […] Highlight #7 *Guliani Discusses McCain's Unchanging Ways and Plans for Vice Presidency*(FNC 08/07/08 5:04pm) NAUERT: And there was a flurry of emails that came out today. They're all denouncing John McCain, saying, "Ok. He was an okay guy back then, but look now how far he has moved south. How much he has embraced President Bush." GULIANI: I've known John forever. I mean a long time. He's a very good friend, and is essentially the same John McCain I knew ten years ago, fifteen years ago. Uh, same positions… on climate change… on energy. I mean, he's essentially the same guy. NAUERT: Do you think he'll end up regretting this ad in any sense in that it could potentially hurt him with his conservative base? GULIANI: I don't think so. Look. You've got a president of all the people. Yes, he is a republican, yes, he is a conservative, But most of all he's an American. I mean, that's the thing about John McCain that makes you admire him. You know it all comes from his great love for this country, he's going to put the country first. And the party is important, but the part comes second. The country comes first. NAUERT: Okay. And that's certainly a theme that he's been echoing, uh, this week and last. You said he should wait until Barack Obama picks his VP. GULIANI: I would wait. You know he's gonna make the decision he makes when he wants to make it. I'd like to have all the information available, including who Barack Obama picks. I would imagine that at this point John has it down to four or five people who he would be satisfied with would be good presidents. But then you've got to pick that one that would be a very good president , that could step right in, take over in a moment's notice, but also, obviously, one that would help him win the election. […] NAUERT: … Does he need a younger person? Does he need, you know- GULIANI: … he needs a person with experience, with background. And someone he's confident can be his partner. Because the vice president now has to be a partner in the sense of the vice president has to know what's going on, has to be part of it. We live in a world in which things happen so fast that, um, we need a vice president who's ready. I remember in September 11 th- NAUERT: No one knows that better than you. GULIANI: I remember on September 11th being told the vice president was going to call me back. Um. I didn't know what happened to the president that morning. And the idea that Dick Cheney was going to call me back. First off, I thought, where is the president, what happened to the president, and I said, well, Dick Cheney is a man who has the background and experience to handle this, if God forbid he has to. But thank god that wasn't the case, and president Bush was okay, but that's something we have to be ready for. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the "big campaign" group.
