Hitler's Last Gamble This major talk by Antony Beevor, the bestselling
author of Stalingrad, Berlin, D-Day and The Second
21st May 2015 World War, timed to coincide with the launch of his new
6:45pm-8.00 pm book Ardennes 1944, focuses on Hitler's ill- fated final
stand when on 16th December 1944, Hitler launched

In January 1945, when the Red Army launched its
onslaught towards Berlin, the once-feared German war
machine was revealed to be broken beyond repair. The
Ardennes was the battle which finally broke the
Wehrmacht.
Antony Beevor served as a regular officer in the 11th
Hussars in Germany. He is the author of Crete - The
Battle and the Resistance, which won a Runciman
Prize; Paris After the Liberation, 1944-1949 (written with
his wife Artemis Cooper); Stalingrad, which won the
Samuel Johnson Prize, the Wolfson Prize for History
and the Hawthornden Prize for Literature; Berlin - The
Downfall, which received the first Longman-History
Today Trustees' Award; The Battle for Spain; The
Mystery of Olga Chekhova and, D-Day, which received
the RUSI Westminster Medal. His most recent book The
Second World War was a no:1 bestseller in Britain and
four other countries, and has already been translated
into 23 different languages around the world. His books
have appeared in thirty languages and sold more than
six million copies.
A former chairman of the Society of Authors, he has
received honorary doctorates from the Universities of
Kent and Bath and is visiting professor of Birkbeck
College and the University of Kent. In 2014 he was the
recipient of the Pritzker Military Museum & Library
Literature Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military
Writing.
