KEY BLOCK----- Joe Sestak for Senate [ http://JoeSestak.com ] Dear John, Every year, Christmas brings the Sestak family together - my wife Susan and our daughter Alex join my mom, my brother and seven sisters and their kids. There really isn't a dinner table big enough! However we celebrate the holidays,-- Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and others -- this season always seems to bring loved ones together. So from my family to yours, we wish you joy and happiness heading into the new year. Click Here To Play our Holiday Video [ http://joesestak.com/happyholidays ] This year, we have a lot to celebrate, but we also have to remain committed to helping one another in these difficult times. Throughout the state, I meet Pennsylvanians who have been hit hardest by the recession. One in eleven of us are still looking for work. For those who have jobs, wages remain flat while our utility bills and grocery bills continue to go up. That's why I've been working in Congress to help working families who have borne the brunt of this recession through no fault of their own. My recent op-ed in the Harrisburg Patriot-News describes what I'm doing to make sure the end of this recession becomes a real recovery for Pennsylvania - [ http://www.pennlive.com/editorials/index.ssf/2009/12/sestak_we_must_invest_to_creat.html ] Please also read the feature article in this month's edition of Philadelphia Magazine- Click Here [ http://www.phillymag.com/articles/joe_sestak_profile_run_joe_run/ ] *Helping Laid Off Workers About to Lose Their Health Care* I am grateful that the House of Representatives included my legislation to extend COBRA health benefits in the jobs bill that passed this week. Since I introduced the bill in October to assist workers who are still looking for jobs by continuing the government's 65 percent subsidy of COBRA's premium costs for the unemployed, my office has been getting emails and calls from coast to coast. The assistance, which I helped pass as part of the Economic Stimulus Bill, began to expire starting at the beginning of this month. When I recently met with over a dozen people who have lost or are about to lose their health care coverage if Congress fails to act, one could so readily see the damage unaccountable leadership in Washington has brought about, and why we need to help those who are being laid off and losing health care through no fault of their own. Here are some of the clips from our meeting at the Philadelphia Unemployment Project office: CBS 3 News Report - [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCGrtbwlCZk&feature=channel ] Fox 29 News Report - [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJ5QpfOlpoY&feature=player_embedded ] Losing one's job is difficult enough. Losing health coverage for ourselves or our families, while fearing bankruptcy in the event of injury or illness, is something none of us should have to face heading into the holiday season. I now urge the Senate to move swiftly and follow our lead in passing this COBRA extension by year's end. Here are just a few stories from the people I met with. [ http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rep-joe-sestak/losing-health-care-famili_b_392765.html ] *Keeping Families in Their Homes* My Congressional office has already worked to help hundreds of Pennsylvania families facing foreclosure stay in their homes.  A survey of five central Pennsylvania offices shows that families living in that region could be at the greatest risk -- foreclosures are on pace to increase by 30 percent.  We've taken a number of critical steps to stem the tide of foreclosures, but it is clear that more comprehensive action is needed.  That's why I introduced a bill to provide $100 million in competitive federal matching grants to states and localities that initiate foreclosure diversion programs. Philadelphia's program, which brings mortgage holders and lenders together for a "conciliation conference," has already helped boost the number of mortgage modifications to keep families in their home. Click Here [ http://joesestak.com/Home/Entries/2009/12/10_Sestak_Proposes_Assistance_for_Struggling_Homeowners.html ]  *We Have to Learn to Work Together* Many school districts throughout Pennsylvania are suffering from high costs for transportation for special education students because of a failure to effectively coordinate these services between school districts. So I introduced legislation to encourage broader cooperation between school districts. This way, we can reduce costs and more efficiently provide educational services to students. Schools in the Lehigh Valley are already leading by example. Bethlehem's school district partners with Northampton Area School District to cover the costs of sending special education students to an out-of-district school. If the two districts did not split the costs, it would cost Bethlehem Area double. Click Here [ http://joesestak.com/Home/Entries/2009/12/9_Joe_Sestak_Announces_Legislation_to_Encourage_School_District_Cooperation.html ] *New Wall Street Safeguards Mark Clear Break with Old Policies* Just months after passing an Economic Stimulus Bill to rescue America from the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, I helped pass new legislation that will restore oversight to the financial markets, provide mechanisms for limiting executive pay, and prevent predatory lending practices. Click Here [ http://joesestak.com/Home/Entries/2009/12/11_Joe_Sestak_Supports_Reforms_to_Protect_Pennsylvania_Families_from_Wall_Street_Abuses.html ] These difficult times require leaders who will challenge Wall Street on behalf of working families. Still, there are some who will neither stand up and correct the abuses that occurred in the gambling with earnings of working families, nor admit responsibility for removing the referee from Wall Street and for their role in backing the Bush Administration's failed economic policies. Instead, we need principled, accountable leadership in government to restore the people's trust in their elected officials. I disagree with the record of voting by our present Senator, Arlen Specter, when he supported policies that failed to protect the interests of the working family: * De-regulating Wall Street, forbidding any requirement for reporting derivative transactions, tearing down the walls between investment companies and consumer banks, and removing requirements that banks keep sufficient cash reserves on hand. (S. 900, Vote #105, 5/6/99) (H.R. 4577, 12/15/2000) * Repeatedly backing Bush's deficit-funded tax breaks for multi-millionaires, doubling our national debt from $4.5 trillion to over $9 trillion. * Eliminating "pay-as-you-go" (PAYGO) rules, which had created 3 budget surpluses under President Clinton by requiring Congress to offset the cost of any new spending programs. (H.R. 5708, Vote #482, 11/14/2002) * Voting to strip a key provision to save homes from foreclosure by empowering bankruptcy judges to reduce principal and interest rates for homeowners in bankruptcy [S AMDT 1014, 4/30/09]. Pennsylvanians are still feeling the effects of these misguided policies, which let Wall Street greed go unchecked.  At its worst point, 7,000 Americans lost their jobs every month, and 5.4 million have been looking for work for at least 27 weeks. Families have lost homes to foreclosure, bringing down property values across the state. Many seniors who have worked their entire lives have seen their retirement savings and pensions wiped out. As your next Senator, I'll work to rebuild Pennsylvania for everyone. As we head into the cool winter months, our campaign to rebuild Pennsylvania continues to heat up.  We've traveled to all 67 counties, we're taking on the establishment, and we continue to grow our support.  As we approach the New Year, I'm resolved to keep working side-by-side with you so that we can bring a new generation of leadership to the U.S. Senate and rebuild Pennsylvania's middle class.
