[00:00:00] You do know that files like to sleep
[00:00:02] with children oneon-one, don't you?
[00:00:04] Isn't that something that you you've
[00:00:06] learned by now?
[00:00:07] >> The I'm sorry. I don't know what's going
[00:00:10] on here.
[00:00:10] >> People don't want to talk about it, so
[00:00:12] I'm going to talk about it. I just can't
[00:00:14] unsee what I've seen.
[00:00:18] My family grew up in evangelical uh
[00:00:23] circles and Canut Camps was the place
[00:00:26] for summer camp in the '9s, 2000s.
[00:00:35] He ended his life in 2019.
[00:00:40] I've been on a journey ever since to
[00:00:41] find out what happened to my brother. My
[00:00:43] brother was really struggling. I would
[00:00:45] get these calls from my mom or my dad
[00:00:47] and they'd be like, "We just had to put
[00:00:48] Trey in treatment. He's not doing well."
[00:00:53] >> Pete's ministry was tremendous. It's
[00:00:57] going to come out that Pete Newman was
[00:01:00] abusing boys, but it was really just
[00:01:02] boys being boys. Typical middle middle
[00:01:05] school experimentation. Like minimized
[00:01:07] it, downplayed it with my brother Trey
[00:01:09] right there.
[00:01:11] >> Basically saying, "Here's the story and
[00:01:12] you're sticking to it."
[00:01:14] >> To talk about the details of sexual
[00:01:16] abuse,
[00:01:17] >> it can be very hurtful to the child.
[00:01:20] >> It can be.
[00:01:21] >> He's known for his crucifixion
[00:01:23] reenactments. So, it's called Cross
[00:01:25] Talk. There would be one night where
[00:01:27] there's like a bonfire, like a burning
[00:01:29] cross, and you nail your sins to the
[00:01:31] cross, and everyone's weeping. These are
[00:01:32] like sevenyear-old kids in some of the
[00:01:34] camps.
[00:01:35] >> This is the biggest sex abuse scandal
[00:01:37] that no one's ever heard about. The
[00:01:39] reason why no one's ever heard about it
[00:01:41] is because the insurance company and
[00:01:43] Canuck did a really good job of covering
[00:01:45] it up.
[00:01:45] >> This is happening all over the
[00:01:47] world in every community in
[00:01:52] it's everywhere. Been in all the
[00:01:54] churches forever. But it's like they're
[00:01:56] using his name to get to us to to the
[00:02:00] kids.
[00:02:01] >> My brother Trey was really struggling
[00:02:03] how it and then died destroyed my faith
[00:02:06] because I'm like where were you God?
[00:02:09] Where are you? Why are you letting this
[00:02:12] happen? These institutions
[00:02:15] are a part of the problem, right? It's
[00:02:17] especially atrocious when it's in the
[00:02:19] name of Jesus. Idols demand sacrifice
[00:02:23] like Mulik.
[00:02:25] We just covered this with Dr. Dan
[00:02:27] Schneider.
[00:02:28] >> It's a lot about personal sin, right? In
[00:02:31] most mainstream evangelical theology and
[00:02:34] we've ignored this concept of
[00:02:36] institutional sin.
[00:02:38] >> Really scared to be honest because we
[00:02:40] never suspected something like that from
[00:02:42] him when he said he was a pastor and all
[00:02:45] stuff of that
[00:02:46] >> because of how incentives are aligned
[00:02:47] towards you know fundraising money as
[00:02:50] part of it. It's created idols. People
[00:02:54] idolize Joe White. People idolize
[00:02:55] Canuck. People idolize Camp Mystic.
[00:02:58] People idolize their mega church. You
[00:03:00] name it.
[00:03:08] You're letting this guy stay on your
[00:03:10] camp property while awaiting trial when
[00:03:13] this has just happened to his daughter.
[00:03:15] >> You're a hero to our child. Um, you're
[00:03:18] he had more kids doing year- round Bible
[00:03:21] studies, which is one of our top
[00:03:23] measures of success.
[00:03:26] >> I'm here because my brother died by side
[00:03:28] in 2019 after settling his civil lawsuit
[00:03:31] against Canuck that involved a
[00:03:33] restrictive NDA.
[00:03:35] >> I just saw that NDA for the first time
[00:03:37] after we passed Trey's law in Texas
[00:03:41] in September
[00:03:42] >> when Oh man, dude.
[00:03:44] >> 2025. And now I know why they were so
[00:03:47] >> NDA him after the abuse.
[00:03:49] >> All of these victims. Yeah. Except one
[00:03:52] family refused to sign the NDA. Kanekut
[00:03:54] came after them. Federally sanctioned
[00:03:56] them because they refused to sign the
[00:03:58] NDA. He was scared to speak about his
[00:04:00] abuse even in therapeutic settings. I
[00:04:03] used to refer to him as a survivor, but
[00:04:06] he didn't survive past the age of 29. So
[00:04:08] now I refer to him as a victim and I'm
[00:04:10] trying to be his voice.
[00:04:11] >> Pete Newman gets arrested.
[00:04:13] >> Yeah. Then more of these people start
[00:04:15] falling. Then they reach out to all the
[00:04:18] victims and they try to make it sound
[00:04:20] like it was some other event that them
[00:04:22] up in the head.
[00:04:24] >> And then they convince them to sign an
[00:04:27] NDA saying that they'll never talk about
[00:04:29] how Pete Newman or anybody else at Camp
[00:04:32] Canakook and in the defense attorney is
[00:04:35] having them having their client sign
[00:04:38] this
[00:04:39] Floodwaters claimed the lives of 25
[00:04:41] campers and two counselors at Camp
[00:04:43] Mystic on July 4th, known as Heavens 27.
[00:04:46] Today's lawsuit alleges those deaths
[00:04:48] were preventable.
[00:04:50] >> My life changed again on July 4th of uh
[00:04:54] 2025
[00:04:56] when I was at the beach with my family
[00:04:58] and um my sorority sister's group text
[00:05:01] started blowing up and it was like flash
[00:05:04] flooding in the Hill Country. I'm like,
[00:05:06] so like I'm I'm up in the Northeast. I'm
[00:05:09] like, why are you giving me weather
[00:05:10] updates? Um, and then that escalated
[00:05:13] into
[00:05:15] Yla's missing, one of my sorty sister's
[00:05:17] daughters. And then I turn on the news.
[00:05:20] I mean, we're all getting ready for the
[00:05:21] Fourth of July parade. And um then I
[00:05:25] keep getting texts. There's a text I got
[00:05:27] of a cabin floating down the river with
[00:05:29] looked like 50 kids in it.
[00:05:41] But anyways, maybe the next time you go
[00:05:43] to the Texas Gun Experience, you can
[00:05:44] take this with you
[00:05:45] >> for real. Oh my gosh. Thank you.
[00:05:51] >> This one. I like this one.
[00:05:53] >> You like 15?
[00:05:54] >> Yeah.
[00:05:59] >> Brush it.
