U.S. Olympic Athletes Need to Stay Out of Politics
📄 Extracted Text (1,580 words)
[00:00:00] It feels amazing. I love representing
[00:00:03] the US. I freaking love living there. I
[00:00:06] love it. And I'm so happy I get to
[00:00:08] represent USA.
[00:00:14] >> Blake, isn't it just so nice that all of
[00:00:16] our Olympians are just, you know,
[00:00:18] honoring the flag, Patriots, just being
[00:00:21] so gracious in their interviews in
[00:00:24] Milan. Isn't it amazing?
[00:00:25] >> If only if only that were the case,
[00:00:27] Andrew.
[00:00:29] if
[00:00:30] >> Oh man, why don't you start us off,
[00:00:31] Blake? What What the What's the most
[00:00:33] offensive this year?
[00:00:35] >> First of all, I'm going to say the real
[00:00:36] the real villain here, of course, are
[00:00:38] the press because they're the ones who
[00:00:39] ask the questions. I don't think it's
[00:00:41] not like the Oscars where everyone goes
[00:00:43] up on stage and like they're instantly
[00:00:44] they're chomping at the bit to go out
[00:00:46] and be like, "By the way, screw
[00:00:47] America." It's that every single person
[00:00:50] after they compete, after they win a
[00:00:52] medal, there's some hack with a media
[00:00:54] badge who's like, "How does it feel
[00:00:56] awkward to compete for your evil demon
[00:00:59] fascist country?" Which they'll never
[00:01:01] ask anyone in any other country. So, the
[00:01:03] one that's been in the news lately uh
[00:01:05] that stood out is freestyle skater
[00:01:07] Hunter Hess, who had some negative
[00:01:10] vibes. Uh we'll show that clip 310
[00:01:13] >> up mixed emotions to represent the US
[00:01:16] right now, I think. Um, it's a little
[00:01:18] hard. Um, there's obviously a lot going
[00:01:21] on that I'm not the biggest fan of and I
[00:01:23] think a lot of people aren't. If it
[00:01:25] aligns with my moral values, um, I feel
[00:01:27] like I'm representing it. Uh, just cuz
[00:01:29] I'm wearing the flag doesn't mean I
[00:01:31] represent everything that's going on in
[00:01:33] the US. Um, so yeah, I just kind of want
[00:01:36] to do it for my friends and my family
[00:01:37] and the people that support me getting
[00:01:38] here.
[00:01:42] >> And it's all such a it's all such a
[00:01:44] rigged thing. There's there's an
[00:01:46] American-born skier, Eileen Goo. She's
[00:01:49] uh she competed in uh in China the ch
[00:01:52] last Winter Olympics were in China. She
[00:01:53] competed in those as an American-born
[00:01:56] individual but of Chinese descent. She's
[00:01:58] competing for China again. And what
[00:01:59] she's like the perfect example because
[00:02:01] she's opined. Oh, oh, we need legal
[00:02:03] abortion in America. We need She
[00:02:06] supports Black Lives Matter. And anytime
[00:02:08] Chinese internal policy of any kind
[00:02:11] comes up, she's like, I just I do not
[00:02:12] comment on internal matters within the
[00:02:14] People's Republic of China. Like 100% to
[00:02:17] double standard. 100% nonsense. Nobody's
[00:02:19] ever going to badger her. Oh, how do you
[00:02:22] feel about internal events in Hong Kong,
[00:02:24] this or that treatment of dissident,
[00:02:26] this or that political action by the
[00:02:29] Chinese government, which is vastly more
[00:02:31] authoritarian than anything going on
[00:02:33] under President Trump. Pure nonsense.
[00:02:35] But instead, we get more of this. We
[00:02:37] have another clip. Uh this is skater
[00:02:39] Amber Glenn. Uh clip 311.
[00:02:42] >> It's been a hard time for the community
[00:02:45] overall under this administration. Uh it
[00:02:48] isn't the first time that we've had to
[00:02:49] come together as a community and try and
[00:02:53] fight for our human rights. And now
[00:02:57] especially, it's not just affecting the
[00:02:59] queer community, but many other
[00:03:01] communities. I hope I can use my
[00:03:03] platform and my voice throughout these
[00:03:05] games to try and encourage people to
[00:03:09] stay strong uh in these hard times. Uh I
[00:03:14] know that a lot of people will say
[00:03:16] you're just an athlete like stick to
[00:03:17] your job, shut up about politics, but
[00:03:20] politics affect us all. Uh it is
[00:03:23] something that I will not just be quiet
[00:03:25] about because it is something that
[00:03:28] affects us in our everyday lives.
[00:03:32] Deport. That's my word for them. Deport.
[00:03:36] >> I don't I don't even care.
[00:03:38] >> It's so obscene that clip. We've played
[00:03:40] that one before because it was from pre
[00:03:42] before
[00:03:44] this this is so offensive to so many
[00:03:46] people because Blake, can you riddle me
[00:03:48] this like one policy from the Trump
[00:03:51] administration that is affecting LGBTQ
[00:03:54] plus IIA whatevers? One policy. As
[00:03:57] America turns 250 this year, we want to
[00:04:00] help good ranchers take a moment to
[00:04:02] remember the people who helped build it.
[00:04:03] Not the ones in the history books, but
[00:04:05] the ones who woke up before the sun,
[00:04:07] season after season, without seeking any
[00:04:09] sort of applause. And those people are
[00:04:11] America's ranchers. For over 250 years,
[00:04:13] ranchers have worked tirelessly to feed
[00:04:15] America through every kind of storm,
[00:04:17] through droughts, wars, recessions,
[00:04:19] pandemics. That's the kind of legacy
[00:04:21] Good Ranchers was built on. Unlike
[00:04:23] others, Good Ranchers is a meat company
[00:04:24] that's 100% committed to America. And if
[00:04:28] you subscribe to any of their boxes of
[00:04:30] 100% American meat, you'll save up to
[00:04:32] $500 a year. Plus, if you use our code K
[00:04:36] I R Kirk, you'll get an additional $25
[00:04:39] off your first order. Visit
[00:04:40] goodranchers.com today.
[00:04:43] >> I guess we we're rolling back we're
[00:04:45] rolling back some of the the transgender
[00:04:46] insanity. And then the other day because
[00:04:48] of the rule that they said stop waving
[00:04:50] pride flags at government facilities,
[00:04:52] they took down the pride flag at the
[00:04:54] Stonewall National Monument, which I got
[00:04:56] a big kick out of, but I I feel like
[00:04:58] that's the biggest atrocity. Obviously,
[00:05:00] they're not doing anything on uh
[00:05:02] certainly not their right to exist or
[00:05:04] whatever hyperbolic rhetoric you'll find
[00:05:06] online. It
[00:05:07] >> it's it's so offensive to me because uh
[00:05:10] listen, all these people enjoy wonderful
[00:05:12] lives. They have amazing opportunities
[00:05:14] because of this country. Just if you
[00:05:16] can't say nothing nice, just don't say
[00:05:18] anything at all. And you're right,
[00:05:20] Blake. It's these media villains that
[00:05:22] come in and they try and bait athletes
[00:05:24] that have no media training, that don't
[00:05:26] know how to kind of weave out of a of a
[00:05:28] stupid question. They were doing this,
[00:05:30] by the way, at the Australian Open as
[00:05:32] well. It was one guy who kept going
[00:05:34] around saying, "What is it like in this
[00:05:36] terrible time in your fascist
[00:05:37] dictatorial country?" And it's
[00:05:39] completely a rigged game. They're not
[00:05:41] asking anybody else this. I mean, why
[00:05:43] don't they go ask uh British athletes
[00:05:45] say, "Well, what does it feel like to
[00:05:46] have your whole country invaded by
[00:05:48] Muslims? What's what's it is it really
[00:05:50] hard to represent your country?" No. No
[00:05:52] questions about that. What about the
[00:05:54] cover up of the rape gangs? No. None of
[00:05:56] it. Uh and and this is part of, you
[00:05:59] know, we're victims of our own success
[00:06:00] here. And Blake, you've probably
[00:06:02] experienced this. When when you travel
[00:06:03] abroad, the foreign media covers like
[00:06:06] half of their own country and then half
[00:06:08] of their programming is just devoted to
[00:06:09] anything that's going on in America. So
[00:06:11] the entire world feels like they're
[00:06:13] entitled to opine on American domestic
[00:06:15] politics.
[00:06:16] >> Oh yeah. Which is
[00:06:17] >> we are 100% victims of our own success
[00:06:20] and like and just how fascinating we are
[00:06:22] there. I've seen people
[00:06:24] joke where it's like Canadians
[00:06:26] notoriously follow often follow American
[00:06:28] politics more than their own politics. A
[00:06:32] lot of Europeans as you say it's 50/50.
[00:06:33] And I guess we're also just victims of
[00:06:36] the nature of modern sports media. If
[00:06:37] you're if you're a sports journalist,
[00:06:40] probably no one's going to care that
[00:06:42] much about your curling athletes unless
[00:06:44] oh, if you can get them to say something
[00:06:46] bashing ice, bashing the administration,
[00:06:48] it's now a general story, which they
[00:06:50] were completely successful at. We have
[00:06:52] clip 361.
[00:06:54] >> But we'd be remiss if we didn't at least
[00:06:56] mention what's going on in Minnesota and
[00:06:57] what a tough time it's been for
[00:07:00] everybody. I am a lawyer as you know and
[00:07:03] we do the con we we have a constitution
[00:07:06] and it it allows us to freedom of the
[00:07:08] press and freedom of speech
[00:07:11] uh protects us from unreasonable
[00:07:14] searches and seizures
[00:07:16] and makes it that we have to you know
[00:07:20] have probable cause to be pulled over
[00:07:24] and what's happening in Minnesota is
[00:07:26] wrong. There's no shades of gray.
[00:07:30] It's clear.
[00:07:32] >> Yeah. You know what's it is wrong what's
[00:07:34] happening in Minnesota because these
[00:07:36] agitators should stop harassing law
[00:07:38] enforcement. You dunce
[00:07:41] >> man. They really anyone can become a
[00:07:43] curler is what I got from that video.
[00:07:45] It's like oh this like 45year-old lawyer
[00:07:47] looking guy. Uh but to make sure we get
[00:07:49] this in uh Vice President Vance had a
[00:07:52] very good response to Hunter Hess's
[00:07:54] comments that we showed a few minutes
[00:07:55] ago. We need to play that.
[00:07:57] >> Uh 363.
[00:07:59] Olympic athletes were unbelievable and I
[00:08:01] know the entire country is rooting for
[00:08:03] them. Yes, you're going to have some
[00:08:04] Olympic athletes who pop off about
[00:08:06] politics. I feel like that happens every
[00:08:07] Olympics. My advice to them would be to
[00:08:10] try to bring the country together and
[00:08:12] when you're representing the country,
[00:08:14] you're representing Democrats and
[00:08:16] Republicans. You're there to play a
[00:08:18] sport and you're there to represent your
[00:08:19] country and hopefully win a medal.
[00:08:21] You're not there to pop off about
[00:08:22] politics. So, when Olympic athletes
[00:08:24] enter the political arena, they should
[00:08:26] expect some push back. But most Olympic
[00:08:28] athletes, whatever their politics, are
[00:08:29] doing a great job, are are uh certainly
[00:08:32] enjoy the support of the entire country
[00:08:34] and I think recognize that the way to
[00:08:35] bring the country together is not to
[00:08:37] show up in a foreign country and attack
[00:08:38] the president of the United States.
[00:08:41] >> Let me translate that for you. Shut up
[00:08:44] and dribble.
[00:08:46] That's it. That's all we want you to
