[00:27:00] Susan banthony list uh I am your [00:27:03] moderator for this press conference [00:27:05] today on a very very important day a [00:27:07] very important day uh this is the most [00:27:10] important piece of legislation on the [00:27:13] abortion issue that has been debated in [00:27:15] the Senate will be debated in the senate [00:27:18] in 40 [00:27:20] years the most important piece since Row [00:27:22] versus Wade In other words and why is [00:27:25] that well it's been extreme there have [00:27:27] been many many important debates all [00:27:28] along the way in many legislatures [00:27:30] across the country including the house [00:27:32] and the Senate all of those measures [00:27:35] have been very good measures they have [00:27:37] uh protected women they've protected [00:27:39] children but they have all regulated [00:27:41] around the baby they have discuss in [00:27:45] what Manner can we kill the child who [00:27:47] will pay for the killing of the child [00:27:50] who H whose permission must we seek and [00:27:53] get before the child is [00:27:55] aborted those are important questions [00:27:58] that must be addressed this one speaks [00:28:00] to the humanity of that boy or girl who [00:28:03] was waiting to be born in just a few [00:28:05] weeks and that makes this very [00:28:08] different that addresses the humanity of [00:28:11] this child who is waiting to be born to [00:28:15] another beautiful human being her mother [00:28:18] so this bill protects them both this [00:28:22] bill would put us in a different [00:28:24] category when signed by a pro-life [00:28:26] president this bill would put us out of [00:28:29] the League of Nations who have refrained [00:28:32] from protecting children uh after that [00:28:35] point we are one of only Seven Nations [00:28:38] that have refrained from protecting [00:28:40] children after 20 weeks we are in the [00:28:43] company of China North Korea Vietnam and [00:28:46] others that is not the human rights club [00:28:48] we would like to be in and we need to be [00:28:50] out thank goodness that we have Senator [00:28:53] Lindsey Graham perfectly suited to this [00:28:55] moment for a whole variety of reasons [00:28:58] because of his sharp mind because of his [00:29:02] Good Humor even in the middle of a [00:29:04] debate like this for his desire to take [00:29:06] on this debate in a way that really no [00:29:09] one else has he is the man for this [00:29:12] moment he is the one who was introducing [00:29:14] this bill today with an enormous number [00:29:17] of co-sponsors original co-sponsors I'd [00:29:20] like to thank him from the entire [00:29:22] pro-life movement and thank you for [00:29:24] answering the call to be that person who [00:29:26] was the who was the ideal man to take [00:29:28] this on one of the things that I've [00:29:30] always said about him and I'll say it [00:29:31] here I have never seen anyone surpass [00:29:35] Senator Graham's ability to see the [00:29:38] Strategic moment and seize it because [00:29:41] we're just going to have to say on this [00:29:42] abortion issue there is certainly a deep [00:29:44] moral question there's also an important [00:29:46] strategic question that we are asking [00:29:48] the nation and that is transcending [00:29:51] party transcending gender transcending [00:29:55] ethnicity transcending age is there a [00:29:57] point point where we can come to Common [00:29:59] Ground and come together on this Senator [00:30:01] graah has proved to be the person who [00:30:03] brings those groups of people together [00:30:05] over and over and over again and there's [00:30:07] no better place to do that no more [00:30:09] important place than this one so Senator [00:30:12] Graham thank you thank you all very [00:30:16] much well that was a very good [00:30:18] introduction I got a lot to live up to [00:30:21] uh I will do my best uh at the at the [00:30:24] end of the day I think America needs to [00:30:26] have a discussion among herself who are [00:30:28] we in 2015 what kind of nation do we [00:30:31] want to be uh what kind of uh value set [00:30:34] do we have when you balance interest [00:30:37] where do you come out at abortion on [00:30:39] demand uh of a pregnancy that's 20 weeks [00:30:42] along five months and everything mostly [00:30:46] in politics is balancing interest and [00:30:49] here's what I hope to achieve I hope to [00:30:52] have a discussion in America as to when [00:30:54] do you become who you are if you have a [00:30:58] Soul when do you have it at what point [00:31:00] in time is it appropriate for the [00:31:03] government to step in and provide [00:31:05] protections to the most vulnerable [00:31:07] people in society The [00:31:09] Unborn here's what I believe that as we [00:31:12] have this debate and as we inform the [00:31:14] American people of what we're trying to [00:31:16] achieve here they will come to us in [00:31:19] large [00:31:20] numbers and the only people who will [00:31:22] object to this I think will be the ones [00:31:25] who believe at abortion on demand [00:31:27] anytime anywhere is the only right [00:31:31] answer all I can say is that we're one [00:31:34] of seven countries in a pretty exclusive [00:31:36] club that I would like to get out [00:31:39] of I hope that we can as Americans [00:31:44] understand this is a very defining [00:31:46] moment in our [00:31:47] history who we are and what we believe [00:31:51] so this legislation is groundbreaking [00:31:53] but simple at the same time what I love [00:31:57] most about this piece of legislation is [00:31:58] how simple it [00:32:00] is do you believe that at 20 weeks into [00:32:04] the pregnancy five [00:32:06] months when medical encyclopedias are [00:32:10] encouraging young parents to sing to [00:32:13] their child because they can begin to [00:32:15] recognize your [00:32:17] voice that this is a stage in [00:32:20] development where you should be very [00:32:24] excited because your child is well on [00:32:26] their way [00:32:30] does the government have a legitimate [00:32:32] compelling interest to protect that [00:32:35] baby the answer I believe is [00:32:38] yes and here's the theory of the case [00:32:42] roie Wade was about medical viability [00:32:45] roie Wade acknowledges that there is a [00:32:48] compelling State interest in protecting [00:32:49] The Unborn Child at the point of medical [00:32:52] viability I would argue that since 1973 [00:32:55] to now that standard has probably [00:32:56] changed but we're coming up with a new [00:32:59] standard which I think is very [00:33:02] compelling the standard of medical [00:33:04] practice today in America is that if you [00:33:07] operate on a unborn child at 20 weeks [00:33:09] what happens fairly often because we can [00:33:12] do uh operations on The Unborn Child to [00:33:16] correct defects and to literally save [00:33:17] their lives you have to provide [00:33:20] anesthesia to the baby because they're [00:33:24] capable of feeling extreme pain so [00:33:27] here's the choice for America if a [00:33:29] doctor is required to provide anesthesia [00:33:31] to the child to help save his [00:33:34] life because they feel pain in the [00:33:37] process of being operated on is it okay [00:33:40] for society to say well at that stage in [00:33:42] the pregnancy we don't want the [00:33:43] operation to be an [00:33:48] abortion I believe that most Americans [00:33:50] will say yes we don't want 20we [00:33:53] abortions on demand we want out of this [00:33:55] club the house passed the Bill 242 to [00:34:00] 184 there are exceptions in this bill [00:34:02] for the medical uh for the the life of [00:34:04] the mother to save the if it's a choice [00:34:06] between the unborn child and and the [00:34:09] mother's life we understand that the the [00:34:13] balance goes to saving the mother's life [00:34:16] if you have to pick and choose but you [00:34:18] should have to pick and choose you [00:34:19] should be clear that there's a choice [00:34:21] here it's a terrible choice to have to [00:34:23] make but if it comes down to that choice [00:34:26] we'll leave it up to the [00:34:28] family now we're talking about 5 months [00:34:30] in the pregnancy if there's a claim of [00:34:32] uh a pregnancy by rape or [00:34:34] incest all we ask is [00:34:37] that that claim be reported to a [00:34:39] counselor or medical doctor doesn't have [00:34:42] to be reported uh earlier but it does [00:34:45] have to be reported 48 Hours a waiting [00:34:48] period before you make the decision to [00:34:50] go forward based on a claim of rape or [00:34:53] incest pregnancy at 5 months to me that [00:34:56] is a very reasonable position to take so [00:35:01] what I hope to [00:35:02] do is to create a debate that's been [00:35:06] long overdue in this country about when [00:35:09] you become a [00:35:11] person when you have a soul if you [00:35:14] believe you have one and if the [00:35:17] government can't stand up and be counted [00:35:22] here when can the government stand up [00:35:24] and be counted if this is not worthy of [00:35:27] a debate of a great nation what would [00:35:32] be determining when life begins and How [00:35:35] It [00:35:36] Ends I think is a governmental function [00:35:40] and under the construct of Ro Wade the [00:35:44] government [00:35:46] can regulate [00:35:48] abortion when the unborn child is become [00:35:51] medically viable the question for the [00:35:54] country is do you want your government [00:35:57] to be there care for a child in the [00:35:58] fifth month who is well on their way to [00:36:01] being a part of [00:36:03] society do you want to protect that baby [00:36:06] from [00:36:07] abortion except in very rare [00:36:10] cases and the theory of the case is the [00:36:12] reason we want to protect that baby is [00:36:15] that they're well on their way to [00:36:19] becoming viable they're well on their [00:36:22] way to [00:36:24] becoming part of Who We Are they're [00:36:28] already in my view a part of who we are [00:36:31] and what I want to do is to make the [00:36:32] American people think long and hard [00:36:36] about wholesale abortions at 20 [00:36:38] weeks here's where I'm [00:36:41] firm this does not make us a better [00:36:45] Nation this is not the [00:36:48] America that I yearn [00:36:51] for I yearn for [00:36:54] America that [00:36:56] cares about [00:36:59] people at All Phases of [00:37:02] life and at 20 [00:37:04] weeks you've achieved a [00:37:08] milestone and if I have anything to say [00:37:10] about it we're going to fight for you at [00:37:11] 20 [00:37:12] weeks we're going to fight for you at [00:37:14] two years we're going to fight for you [00:37:15] at a 100 we're going to be there [00:37:18] fighting for the concept of life in a [00:37:20] balanced [00:37:22] way how many votes we get I don't know [00:37:25] but Margie here's what I will predict [00:37:28] over time we will win the more the [00:37:31] American people understand what we're [00:37:32] trying to [00:37:34] do the larger the numbers in support of [00:37:38] what we're trying to do 13 states have [00:37:40] enacted laws similar to this to my [00:37:43] friends in the pro-life [00:37:45] Community this is a good cause this is [00:37:48] the right thing to do we're going to [00:37:50] have this debate without [00:37:52] animosity with joy in our [00:37:54] hearts and we're going to have a [00:37:56] discussion about about who we are as a [00:37:58] nation in [00:38:01] 2015 and I don't know when that day will [00:38:04] come but there will be a day when this [00:38:07] bill is signed in law and there will be [00:38:12] babies who will benefit from this and [00:38:15] every child that is [00:38:17] saved is a blessing thank you very [00:38:23] [Applause] [00:38:26] much speaking as a former 20we baby [00:38:30] thank you um I understand Tony you have [00:38:33] a uh a plane to catch and um Senator [00:38:35] grahe has invited several leaders of pro [00:38:38] lifee organizations to speak and you're [00:38:41] up [00:38:44] first thank you [00:38:47] Marjorie senat Graham I want to thank [00:38:50] you for your leadership and for your [00:38:52] colleagues on your commitment to [00:38:55] Bringing America into line with the vast [00:38:58] majority of other nations that respect [00:39:01] human rights and expect human respect [00:39:04] human life America is only one of one of [00:39:08] only seven nations in the world who [00:39:11] allow abortion at any time for any [00:39:14] reason after the fifth month as far as [00:39:18] human rights go the fewer things America [00:39:20] has in common with the evil regimes of [00:39:24] North Korea and China the better [00:39:28] and it's time for us as Americans to [00:39:30] leave this club of [00:39:31] seven and for me this is a personal [00:39:34] issue this is the reason 20 years ago I [00:39:38] left the field of law enforcement and [00:39:41] became involved in the political arena [00:39:44] is over the issue of life if there's one [00:39:48] thing worth fighting for it is the right [00:39:51] to life and last month large part due to [00:39:56] the diligence in commitment of many here [00:39:59] in this room today we celebrated a great [00:40:02] victory in the house when the pain bill [00:40:04] was passed [00:40:06] overwhelmingly on the second anniversary [00:40:09] of the conviction of the infamous [00:40:11] abortionist Dr Kermit Gosnell for his [00:40:14] crimes against not just babies but their [00:40:18] mothers as [00:40:20] well remember abortion is not just about [00:40:24] ending the life of a baby in many cases [00:40:28] it's about robbing the future of a [00:40:31] mother the brutality of what Dr Gosnell [00:40:34] did is underscored by the fact that many [00:40:37] of the babies that he killed outside the [00:40:40] womb by what he said snipping their [00:40:43] spinal cords would have experienced the [00:40:46] same excruciating pain if killed while [00:40:49] still in the [00:40:51] womb now I'm going to say for the family [00:40:53] research Council we wholeheartedly [00:40:57] support this measure and we'll work with [00:41:00] Senator Graham and his colleagues to [00:41:02] pass this [00:41:03] bill and we agree with President Obama [00:41:07] on what he said earlier this week here [00:41:09] in Washington DC when he spoke before [00:41:11] the Catholic Health Health Association [00:41:13] he said this quote a shared belief that [00:41:16] every human being made in the image of [00:41:19] God deserves to live in dignity that all [00:41:24] children no matter who they are or where [00:41:26] they come from or how much money they [00:41:28] were born into ought to have the [00:41:31] opportunity to achieve their god-given [00:41:34] potential end quote well that potential [00:41:38] that opportunity it begins with life so [00:41:42] I call upon President Obama and his [00:41:45] party to withdraw their opposition to [00:41:48] this bill and I call upon him to pledge [00:41:51] his support for this measure that would [00:41:54] help bring his administration's policies [00:41:58] in line with his political rhetoric [00:42:01] margerie thank [00:42:03] you Tony Perkins thank you for your [00:42:07] voice I um want to introduce next Carol [00:42:11] Tobias the president of National right [00:42:13] to life um National right to Life's uh [00:42:16] casting this in terms of pain is vital [00:42:19] was vitally important began in Nebraska [00:42:22] and uh helps us all understand the what [00:42:25] this debate is actually about so thank [00:42:26] you Carol [00:42:28] thank you Marjorie and good morning I am [00:42:31] Carol tobas president of the national [00:42:32] right to life committee the national [00:42:34] Federation of state right to life [00:42:36] organizations you've been handed a much [00:42:38] longer statement than I'm going to give [00:42:40] this morning uh but that will also be [00:42:41] available on our website at nrc.gov [00:42:57] abortion beginning at 20 weeks after [00:42:59] fertilization which is 22 weeks uh of [00:43:02] pregnancy a point by which if not [00:43:04] earlier there is substantial medical [00:43:07] evidence that the unborn child can feel [00:43:08] pain public opinion polls show that by [00:43:11] lopsided margins Americans support [00:43:13] prohibiting abortion at least by this [00:43:15] stage in development yet those of us [00:43:18] seeking to advance this legislation face [00:43:20] some formidable obstacles and I would [00:43:22] like to discuss one of those this [00:43:23] morning we see a willingness on the part [00:43:25] of many journalists to repeat UNS [00:43:28] skeptically and often to adopt as simple [00:43:31] fact pronouncements from special [00:43:32] interest groups such as the Planned [00:43:34] Parenthood Federation of America and the [00:43:36] American Congress of uh Obstetricians [00:43:39] and gynecologists on any point that [00:43:41] might be cast as a medical or science [00:43:43] question on January 14th of this year Dr [00:43:46] Hal Lawrence the Chief Executive Officer [00:43:48] of ACOG held a conference call to [00:43:50] educate journalists Politico reported [00:43:53] Lawrence said that less than 1% of all [00:43:56] abortions occur at after 20 weeks but [00:43:58] those that do are mostly situations [00:44:01] where the life of the mother is at risk [00:44:03] or there are severe medical [00:44:05] complications the best available [00:44:07] evidence suggests that the great [00:44:09] majority of abortions performed in the [00:44:11] late second trimester are not performed [00:44:14] because either mother or baby faces an [00:44:16] acute medical crisis yet Lawrence's [00:44:19] claim is reported as fact on the day of [00:44:22] the house debate May 13th Lawrence held [00:44:24] another conference call to educate [00:44:26] journalists Lawrence attacked the [00:44:28] lawmakers who claimed that at the point [00:44:30] that this bill would prohibit abortions [00:44:32] many babies born prematurely survive [00:44:35] long term laurren said that claim was [00:44:38] quote quite simply wrong end quote there [00:44:41] was no evidence anywhere of a 20we fetus [00:44:44] surviving Lawrence proclaimed The [00:44:47] Washington Post fact Checker concluded [00:44:49] that Lawrence is incorrect when using [00:44:51] the definition in the pain capable [00:44:53] unborn child protection act so in a [00:44:55] conference call called for the specific [00:44:58] purpose of attacking this bill and [00:45:00] smearing the Bill's proponents as [00:45:02] purveyors of Mythology it was the head [00:45:04] of ACOG that was Distributing [00:45:07] misinformation it is common to read in [00:45:10] stories about this legislation and [00:45:11] similar bills at the state level that [00:45:13] medical experts say that unborn children [00:45:16] do not have the capacity to experience [00:45:18] pain at 20 weeks fetal age which experts [00:45:21] are those hm the voice of authority most [00:45:24] often quoted is ACOG in the January 14th [00:45:27] conference call Lawrence said there is [00:45:30] no evidence that there's any fetal pain [00:45:32] until you get past the 23 or 24 we [00:45:35] gestation no evidence consider the [00:45:38] 10-page affidavit submitted to a federal [00:45:41] court and accepted as expert testimony [00:45:44] written by Professor Canal Anan whose [00:45:47] work on the pain capacity of premature [00:45:49] infants transformed the pain control [00:45:53] practices in our nation's neonatal [00:45:55] intensive care units over the past two [00:45:57] decades Dr Anan wrote it is my opinion [00:46:01] that the human fetus possesses the [00:46:03] ability to experience pain from 20 weeks [00:46:05] of gestation if not earlier and the pain [00:46:08] perceived by a fetus is possibly more [00:46:11] intense than that perceived by newborn [00:46:14] term T term newborns or older children [00:46:18] moreover there are many many pages full [00:46:21] of citations from peer reviewed studies [00:46:24] in support of the various specific [00:46:27] findings in the pain capable unborn [00:46:29] child protection act in the light of [00:46:31] this body of documentation the repeated [00:46:34] statements by AOG that there is no [00:46:36] evidence reflects willful ignorance at [00:46:40] best given acog's track record it is [00:46:43] long past time that the news media stop [00:46:46] treating AOG as the voice of authority [00:46:49] on such matters sometimes it might help [00:46:52] to step back and see if a claim seems PL [00:46:54] plausible on its face consider that it [00:46:57] is now common place to see features on [00:46:59] TV or read stories about how unborn [00:47:02] children by 20 weeks fetal age respond [00:47:05] to many forms of stimuli as Senator [00:47:07] Graham mentioned including music and the [00:47:09] mother's [00:47:10] voice we read stories of surgeries [00:47:12] performed on unborn babies in the womb [00:47:15] during the second trimester who are [00:47:17] first of course thoroughly anesthetized [00:47:20] yet AOG and Planned Parenthood ask you [00:47:22] to take their word that these babies and [00:47:25] even babies May many weeks older remain [00:47:28] blissfully insensible to the powerful [00:47:31] grasping tools that are introduced into [00:47:33] the uterus as their arms and legs are [00:47:36] being torn off by Brute Force as this [00:47:39] bill moves forward in the Senate we ask [00:47:42] that serious journalists stop serving as [00:47:45] amplifiers for such misinformation thank [00:47:52] you chanos president of Americans United [00:47:56] for Life the the legal arm of the [00:47:57] pro-life [00:48:01] movement thank you margorie and thank [00:48:04] you all for being here today Senator [00:48:06] Graham I want to especially thank you [00:48:08] for your leadership on this and for all [00:48:10] of the Senators who are standing with [00:48:12] you in this really important and [00:48:15] historic moment as we stand here today [00:48:17] men and women together we are standing [00:48:20] in a long Civil Rights tradition and I [00:48:22] know that many of you like me were [00:48:25] deeply inspired by the seasons movie uh [00:48:28] depicting the events in Selma where [00:48:30] Martin Luther King is sitting in the [00:48:32] jail cell in Selma and he's having a low [00:48:34] moment and he says what happens when a [00:48:37] man stands up and says enough is enough [00:48:41] what happens when a man stands up and [00:48:43] says enough is enough well today we're [00:48:47] here today as men and women standing [00:48:49] together in a civil rights tradition to [00:48:51] say enough is [00:48:54] enough man's inhumanity man is nothing [00:48:58] new but in America we have a very old [00:49:02] and wonderful tradition of standing [00:49:04] against that [00:49:06] inhumanity it is inhuman it is inhuman [00:49:10] to inflict this kind of pain on unborn [00:49:14] children it is inhuman to treat women [00:49:17] who are in crisis as a profit Center for [00:49:20] a billion dollar business how long will [00:49:24] We As Americans stand and say in this [00:49:28] wing of the hospital over here we'll [00:49:30] operate to save a five-month unborn baby [00:49:34] and give them anesthesia while we do it [00:49:36] and then look the other way where right [00:49:38] in another Wing we are destroying a baby [00:49:41] at exactly the same age how long will we [00:49:43] look away from that how [00:49:46] long how long will we continue to ignore [00:49:48] the harm that women experience inside [00:49:51] these so-called abortion [00:49:53] clinics at five months at five months [00:49:56] pregnant when you're visibly and clearly [00:49:59] pregnant you are 35 times more likely to [00:50:02] die as a woman inside an abortion clinic [00:50:04] than you were in the first trimester how [00:50:06] long will we ignore the harm of abortion [00:50:08] to [00:50:10] women today is the day today is the day [00:50:15] today is this day that we stand and say [00:50:19] no [00:50:25] more our last last leader the last she [00:50:28] be first we know that uh Penny Nance the [00:50:31] president of concern women for America [00:50:33] speaking for women across the country [00:50:35] who support this [00:50:37] bill good morning I'm Penny Nance I'm [00:50:40] the CEO and president of concerned women [00:50:42] for America we're the nation's largest [00:50:44] public policy women's organization we [00:50:46] have about 400 chapters around the [00:50:48] country 20 College chapters and we are [00:50:50] so grateful to you Senator Graham this [00:50:53] is a great day this is an important day [00:50:56] I'm GNA take us a little stroll back in [00:50:58] time on this throwback Thursday let's go [00:51:01] back to January of [00:51:03] 1973 Carly Simon had the number one song [00:51:07] You're So Vain which you could listen to [00:51:09] on your state-of-the-art eight track [00:51:12] tape player gas prices spiked at 42 [00:51:15] cents a gallon the average home price [00:51:18] was 29 [00:51:21] $29,900 and the average income was about [00:51:24] $113,000 a year [00:51:27] in the field of medicine they were so [00:51:29] excited about a new advancement called [00:51:31] the insulin pump wow this great new [00:51:34] Gadget was going to be amazing to [00:51:35] medicine and at the time they still [00:51:38] operated on babies newborns without any [00:51:42] anesthesia in fact they continued that [00:51:45] practice in some cases through the [00:51:47] 1980s this is according to the New York [00:51:50] Times your guys not [00:51:52] mine unfortunately there's still pain [00:51:55] deniers out there there's still people [00:51:58] who do not recognize that babies feel [00:52:02] pain in ow at 20 weeks and they're fewer [00:52:06] and farther between and as time [00:52:09] progresses we'll be laughing at that as [00:52:11] well so much has changed polling has [00:52:14] changed today 64% of people believe that [00:52:19] abortion um at in the second Tri second [00:52:22] trimester should be illegal and all a [00:52:26] whole [00:52:27] 80% are concerned about the third [00:52:30] trimester the bottom line is this the [00:52:34] world is very different since roie Wade [00:52:37] Medical Science has shown us that the [00:52:39] the invention of the [00:52:41] sonogram is an important scientific um [00:52:45] tool and we can see that a baby is not a [00:52:48] clump of cells and anyone who says [00:52:51] differently they're the flat earthers [00:52:53] when it comes to science no a baby at 5 [00:52:56] months clearly has a beating heart she [00:52:59] has all of her major organs she can hear [00:53:02] and respond to her mother's voice she [00:53:05] can clap her little hands over her ears [00:53:07] in response to a loud noise and she can [00:53:11] feel [00:53:12] pain she deserves our legal protection [00:53:15] she is part of our human family and we [00:53:19] urge Senator McConnell to bring this [00:53:21] bill to the floor as quickly as possible [00:53:24] we are ready in this country we have the [00:53:27] data we have the science we need to [00:53:30] protect children thank [00:53:34] you thank you we will um entertain [00:53:37] questions that uh from anyone and I [00:53:39] imagine you'd like to hear from Senator [00:53:41] Graham probably most of [00:53:45] all [00:53:46] sorry [00:53:49] okay life site news you talked about [00:53:52] legal theories um as I understand it [00:53:54] reps across the country are overturning [00:53:56] State based 20 F you think that your [00:53:59] bill Canal muster given theseis [00:54:02] absolutely I think science is on our [00:54:04] side and I think law will be on our side [00:54:05] and I welcome the debate and the only [00:54:07] way you can have a a a hearing at the [00:54:09] highest level the land is to get this [00:54:11] bill through the Congress and I really [00:54:14] do believe yes that the science is on [00:54:16] our side that there's a compelling State [00:54:18] interest available to legislative bodies [00:54:20] to protect children who can feel pain at [00:54:22] 5 months and that will be upta as a [00:54:25] reasonable U thing for a a legislative [00:54:27] body to do to protect a child at 20 [00:54:29] weeks [00:54:39] yeah he is uh very favorable to this [00:54:42] bill I think he's a co-sponsor and we'll [00:54:44] find time on the calendar I can promise [00:54:46] you a debate in 2015 and a vote the [00:54:49] other question I wasil [00:55:01] yeah we're not using the theory of [00:55:03] medical viability to advance the the [00:55:05] cause here we're saying there's a [00:55:07] compelling State interest to protect an [00:55:09] unborn child who can feel pain that if [00:55:12] the medical community routinely uses [00:55:15] anesthesia to help save the child's life [00:55:18] they've reached a [00:55:20] developmental age here where the state [00:55:23] has a interest to say no you can't abort [00:55:25] the baby but [00:55:31] well what we're trying to do is create [00:55:33] for legislative bodies a a new way to [00:55:36] protect The Unborn that's the whole [00:55:38] point of this is that the medical [00:55:39] viability is not what we're hanging our [00:55:41] head on here we're hanging ahead on the [00:55:43] fact that medical science since 1973 has [00:55:47] advanced in many areas and this is one [00:55:49] area where it's Advanced that the the [00:55:51] child at 20 weeks can feel pain that the [00:55:53] standards for the most part in the [00:55:55] medical community is to provide [00:55:57] anesthesia and that gives the state a [00:55:59] legitimate interest in protecting that [00:56:00] child from just wholesale [00:56:02] abortion and in the [00:56:19] back well don't get in politics if you [00:56:22] don't want to talk about things like [00:56:24] this you're in the wrong line of [00:56:25] business I mean this is why you want to [00:56:27] get elected I think whether you're for [00:56:30] it or against it this is something worth [00:56:32] talking about and I am confident that if [00:56:36] somebody wants to side with us and stand [00:56:39] up in front of any audience in the [00:56:41] country and say Here's why I want to [00:56:43] stop abortion on demand why I want to [00:56:45] get out of a an exclusive Club of seven [00:56:49] that at 20 weeks 5 months into the [00:56:51] pregnancy I want to stop abortion on [00:56:54] demand for the reasons I just artic [00:56:56] articulated that if you can't sell that [00:56:59] as a reasonable position you're probably [00:57:00] going to get beat [00:57:18] anyway well I think the overall strategy [00:57:21] is to always speak for The Unborn in a [00:57:23] responsible manner she gave a good list [00:57:26] of what I graduated high school in 1973 [00:57:28] I Promise You A lot's changed in my life [00:57:31] like 30 pounds worth uh [00:57:34] so and a lot slower so the bottom line [00:57:38] is that we're we're taking the medical [00:57:41] data that exist and we're trying to find [00:57:44] a new way to stop what we think is a [00:57:47] procedure uh out of sync with America [00:57:50] and who we are and and as medicine [00:57:53] develops further we'll seize those [00:57:55] moments too [00:58:06] sure well I think it means I think it's [00:58:08] just something we should all be proud of [00:58:10] in the pro-life Community but I think [00:58:12] that a lot of pro-choice people say okay [00:58:15] you know 64% of the people are not [00:58:17] pro-choice uh or pro- life what you're [00:58:21] doing is you're seeing people in the [00:58:23] middle saying okay I'm with you here I I [00:58:26] don't see the upside of wholesale [00:58:27] abortions at 20 weeks I get what you're [00:58:30] saying this is not the right thing to do [00:58:32] I don't want to be in this club a seven [00:58:34] so at the end of the day I think what it [00:58:36] says is America is thinking about the [00:58:39] baby this is no longer an academic [00:58:42] debate that we got the American people [00:58:44] to focus on the baby this is about the [00:58:46] baby without animosity to anybody else [00:58:49] so from my point of view it is a giant [00:58:51] step forward not just for the pro-life [00:58:53] movement but for America in general I [00:58:55] just think would be a better ation if we [00:58:57] do not Embrace wholesale abortion on [00:58:58] demand at 5 months into [00:59:01] pregnancy well I think it's just another [00:59:03] theory that will be upheld by the courts [00:59:06] to allow legislative bodies to protect [00:59:09] The Unborn Child a sound legal Theory a [00:59:12] legal Theory based on medical [00:59:14] advancements I got one more question I [00:59:15] gotta go [00:59:27] I think if you're running for president [00:59:30] on the Republican Democratic side you [00:59:32] should let us know what you would do [00:59:33] here and [00:59:35] why I think if you're in the in the [00:59:37] house or the Senate voting on this issue [00:59:41] is uh required because it's an important [00:59:44] issue to most of us here is the central [00:59:48] theme of the pro-life movement at this [00:59:50] moment in time and what I'm looking for [00:59:52] is a debate with those who oppose [00:59:55] this I want to hear in detail we're [00:59:57] going to have a long debate out there we [00:59:59] have a really genuine and it would be [01:00:01] thoughtful and it would be respectful [01:00:03] tell me the upside of this if you're [01:00:06] making sure [01:00:07] that in a case where the life of the [01:00:09] mother is truly at risk that you're [01:00:11] you're going to let the family make that [01:00:13] decision you have a provision when [01:00:17] there's a rape incest claim that can be [01:00:19] addressed tell me the upside what are we [01:00:23] achieving here how are we a better [01:00:25] Nation what is your theory of the case [01:00:28] why do we want to let this happen this [01:00:30] late in the pregnancy I am dying for [01:00:33] that debate I [01:00:35] am going to quite frankly insist that we [01:00:39] have that debate because we're a member [01:00:43] of Seven [01:00:44] Nations that I don't think represent who [01:00:47] we are as Americans most Americans [01:00:49] haven't thought about this and when you [01:00:51] tell them what we're trying to do [01:00:52] they're going to be with [01:00:53] us thank you very much thank you Senator [01:00:56] Graham thank you for today and uh the [01:00:59] heads of the pro-life organizations that [01:01:01] spoke um are you all available to hang [01:01:04] around a little bit if anybody has [01:01:05] questions okay great so just hang at the [01:01:07] front thank [01:01:24] you for
