Subject this and that notes
Hi, Jeffrey,
When we last spoke, you were "on only half power, just 20 cylinders" and you looked forward to
being closer to full power this month. I hope that is coming true and your life is on the mend.
I am writing mostly to say hi, ask if you wanted a visit to Florida sometime in January, and to
share my enjoyment of a few things, starting with a fantastic novel, Dara Horn's "The World To
Come." The book was brought to my attention because I mentioned to a friend that I grew up
with a little, not very good Chagall "on the hallway to the bathroom" that "had been given to my
grandfather by the painter himself." Nowadays fiction has many niches and this book is the
premier novel for people who grew up with childhood Chagalls given to their male ancestors by
the painter himself. It'll also be good for you, I suspect.
When you are able to do so easily again, I hope you'll see the movie "A Single Man" on a big
screen, because the close-ups are so extraordinarily subtle and expressive. It's hard to remember a
more subtle performance than Colin Firth's, but Julianne Moore and two other men do a
wonderful job as well.
Did you ever read that Walker Percy book I sent you in later 2006, Lost in the Cosmos: The last
self-help book?
Regards,
David
