Dear Mrs. deJongh,
My name is and I am about to become at the All Saints Cathedral
School in the upcoming school year. This summer I had the wonderful opportunity to
attend the Junior Statesmen of America Summer School Program Session I at Georgetown
University Session I. Although I intend on becoming an Obstetrician/Gynecologist, I always
wanted to attend the Junior Statesmen of America Summer School Program at
Georgetown University since my freshman year of high school. Hearing stories from my
classmates and schoolmates who had previously attended made me become even more
interested in attending. I would just like to say thank for your support. Without your help I
may have missed out on a beneficial opportunity. I would just like to share with you my
experience there with you as a symbol of my gratitude.
When I first arrived, I was shocked that I was placed into Constitutional Law when I had
chosen Speech and Political Communication. I even learned that undergraduate law
students do not even take this course until their junior year, but my professor, Dr. Martin
Sheffer, made it easy to understand. Surprisingly, I knew most of what he was talking
about and referring to. He was down to earth and spoke to us and not over us so it was
easy to understand what he taught .The main part of this course was completing briefs for
one hundred cases. It was a lot to do but we were all separated into groups to lighten the
work.
At first I was nervous about the Congressional Workshops, where students are placed into
different houses and debate amongst themselves. As the debates started, I started to get

excited and even enjoyed speaking in front of everyone in my house. When it was time for
me to lead a debate, I was well prepared but still a little nervous, but I still ended up
winning my debate which was 'Resolved that, Every able-bodied American be required to
perform some sort of National Service'. I was on the negative side of the resolution. Since
I took speech during my junior year, I had a little more confidence than I usually would
have.
I absolutely enjoyed the speaker days. I met several Congressmen and the
current of the United States, who showed us the new hundred dollar bill. I also
met Washington's first lobbyist for atheists. Although I am a Christian and disagreed with
a lot of what she shared with us, I appreciated how she presented her speech. She did not
make it seem like what I believe is wrong and she is right. She also encouraged students
from the program who admitted that they were also atheists. I also visited the Pentagon,
the Saudi Arabian and Israeli Embassies. On is of this program
was getting the opportunity to meet with
really enjoyed conversing with her because I have always admired her.
This program was both rewarding and beneficial. There were times that I really missed
home and kept on complaining about how much I wanted to go home, but as the time
passed I met many new friends and was even reunited with old ones and had a wonderful
time. I also started getting used to the hectic work and I am prepared for whatever my
college years have in store for me. Again thanks for your support, and I hope that you
continue to help other students to have this wonderful experience.
Sincerely,
